does the bio wheel make a big difference with bacteria or would the same amount of bacteria be on both filters?
It is suppose to have more bacteria then a regular filter but note that if you get the right sized filter your AquaClear will handle the load no problem. Note this though, say your power goes out…. all that bacteria on that bio wheel will die over a matter of a few hours.

I don't like those other filters because the cartride has carbon in it. I don't like carbon. I like my AC 110 because I put what I want in it.

no, same amount of bacteria on both filters.

I have to say I have never had an aquaclear but I have 4 emporer 400's and they haven't let me down yet. as for the carbon just take one of the cartridges and cut the top open. remove the carbon and fill it with whatever, filter floss or other media.. then to maintain throw the filter floss away and rinse the cartridge.. I think I will try an aquaclear soon though so I know whats out there.. also I run the emporer 400's on my 29 gallons. because of the small price difference I always buy the 400 instead of the 280 and if the current is to strong just turn the filter down. I have no problem with the flow all the way up though.

one more question which of these filters is noisier? because this tank is in my bedroom so i would prefer it would be kind of quiet

My biowheel on my 10 gallon used to be noisy. I don't know if I would want an aquaclear 110 in my bedroom either. Maybe an eheim classic canister. mine was silent.

my 13'x13' bedroom has 3 running AC500s (Ac110s) and a penguin mini. The only noise comes from the water splashing.

I just got a AC70 & put it in today on my 29 gal.
So far I love it compared to my old whisper!

My question is why don't you guys like the carbon?
Why do you remove it?
Isn't it necessary?

yea my whisper is doing a good job at all the water is kind of cloudy i replaced the filter cartridge hope that will help thats a main reason why i want to replace the filter. carbon isnt needed to filter to water its used to remove odors and medications i think.

I think that carbon covers up poor tank maintenance. Also my friend had an oscar that had HITH for years thinking it was normal. Told him to try removing the carbon and it healed. Maybe it was the carbon, maybe it wasn't. I would only use carbon after meds. Thats just my opinions though.
