Haitiensis Growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sweet! I guess I am 4-4 on sexing these guys at under an inch.

Duane - I really don't think bloat has anything to do with bloat. I've raised a few Haitiensis on NLS and Massivore delite. You are right about separating them to minimize stress. I plan on giving away the other pair and keeping the best pair.

Agree, my buddy did the " I dont care if they get bloat diet" fed pure brine shrimp and massivore and over fed like crazy and they did great!

But i also have a theory that issues with bloat also has to do with how strong the genes are of the strain. please correct me if im wrong.

I believe stress creates a bloat situation, be it intimidation by siblings, or too high/too low temps, or in the case of food, not eating too much protein, but not enough clearing of the gut. In nature algae seems to be the constant, something that cichlids graze on all day.
It may or may not provide much nutritional value, but may be (as fiber in humans) the stuff that helps purge the gut of pathogenic bacteria.

nice growouts.... its about time for me to pick another pair.

My primary reasoning for separation, was your first statement. You said they are already fighting at 1" (which I find normal for haits) and if you don't separate, one will surely either be directly killed, or indirectly, bloat up and die. The alpha will most likely move on to intimidate another. It took me 19 juvie, deaths before the 20th (the female) survived.
My female first spawned at about 3", and subsequently intimidated her male into a bloat death.
Haits are a very sensitive species when young, so vigilance to every detail is important.

After I acquired a suitable male, they lived together for years pair spawning many times. Right at about 1" is when the fry would always start killing each other with impunity.
They are very much in temperament like beani, although a pair of haits seem to hold a stronger long lasting bond.
