Haitiensis Growout

Concur. At that size, they'll either kill each other by fighting, or stress each other out until they bloat/die.

If they're already fighting, get the egg crate out now.

Completely agree with Duanes and that their bloat is mostly stress related, like the beani. Nice haits

I would never feed a sensitive species like these massivore, when you can get the same/better results with an all natural staple diet that has more Spirulina and less protein.

Ime haitiensis or only sensitive under 5" after that they're pretty much in the clear unlike beani. But your right why worry about massivore once you've got them on sprulina and such. The high/low protein dilemma has always been a debate with haitiensis. And again this is only in my expirience, any bloat issues I've ever had we're directly related to stress. Once stressed they shut down, immune system, digestion, etc then you have problems reguardless of what you feed. What has worked continuously for me is when I get my haitiensis initially is to put them in a tank that I don't have to upgrade them out of for at least a few months. Then have good-great filtration, maximize oxygen flow; wether sponge filter, power heads, airstones, or whatever but the oxygen was a make or break for me. Next keep feedings light, once a day for at least 4 weeks!! Nothing but flakes. After a month i might increase a second feeding but still light and it all depends on their condition. I forgot to add that I maintain water temps around 82-86 and do 30/40% water changes for first month. Shouldn't have lots of waste due to small feedings. I also do a preventative Clout treatment as soon as I get them.

The main thing is to reduce any stress, wether its keeping the tank out of high traffic areas, not keeping other species or dithers, the LESS stress that is added, the more successful you'll be:) I also have a couple more tricks I use but that depends on the fish's progress.

Good info FWP thats what you told me and it worked out excellent! Gage also told me was to just keep them hungry! Need to see more of these great species!

I've had great success with NLS pellets for these. And the "keep them hungry" quote is spot on. I feed lightly once a day and skip one day a week. I also let algae grow on the back side of my tank and on all decoration (driftwood, fake plants, etc...).

I grow them out in a 75 gallon with 2 AC110's and a rena 300 air pump driving some stones. LOTS of filtration and airation. Keep the temps above 82 and steady for the young ones. And I only do 15% w/c per week until they're 5" or more. Seems like the less you disturb the tank before they hit 5", the better.

Either a single Hait to grow out in the 75, or with dividers and lots of cover so they can get away and not see eachother.

I also keep my growout tank in the back of the house where nobody ever goes except me to feed/take care of the tank.

Airation, filtration, and the less you do to the tank to cause stress, the better...Until they're 5" or more. Then they get moved out of the 75 and into a bigger tank. Stress is what seems to do it. Keep the stress low, and they'll be fine.
