If you get anything less than a bazooka... you are a wuss!

Ha... no seriously though, I have both a Sig 245 (sub-compact .45 - law enforcement model in some states in the late 90's) and a Mossberg 500 12 gague for home protection. Both are great options for different reasons. For one, if you rack a round through a shotgun in a quiet house... anyone... ANYONE knows that is the international signal for "time to exit this house quickly". I don't care if you are a bandit, intruder, crackhead or just a lost neighboor in the wrong house, that sound... that unmistakeable sound of a shotgun being racked... that will get you up and out in a hurry. From there, I'll either pursue anyone stupid enough to stay inside with the shotgun itself (bird loads are recommended as a slug will probably kill your assailant, the neighboors, their kids, their dog, and put holes through the car parked outside, the car next to that, and the one next to that, and pretty much anything else in a straight line in front of the barrel. If not the shotgun, then I would probably prefer the .45 as it wont go through most walls with hollow points. Remember... a .45 was not invented for piercing power but instead for punch. If you want something that will go through anything, get a .357 sig, or a .357 magnum... if you want to sit 'em down with a shot, get a .45. Because of the weight and velocity of the ammo, it packs more punch when it hits its target. So thats my recommendation for home defense.

For target practice, consider this. The Sig 239 (I think thats right) is available in .357 sig, .38 and .40 calibers. I believe the .357 and .38 use the same clip, and the same gun can fire all three calibers just by changing out the barrel (and/or the clip if shooting .40 cal). I guess I just like the idea of using .38 ammo at the range and then swapping the barrell out for the .357 for home defense (although again, if worried about it going through walls, the .357 is NOT what you want... I have concrete firewalls in my home).

Its like cars too as far as Glock, Berretta, Sig, Colt, etc... Some people like Chevy, some people like Ford, some people like Ferrari. My local range allows you to rent and try just about every make/model imaginable. I recommend you do the same to find out what you really enjoy shooting. I've shot them all, and I still always come back to a Sig Sauer product. Its just what I personally like to shoot.

Oh, and as for the shells to the face... my Sig ejects almost straight up and the shells are known to hit me dead center in the top of my head pretty often. Not hot enough to burn, but will still make you jump if you are not used to it.

Good luck, happy shooting!

Dont listen to this guy!

NEVER use birdshot for home defense. Bird shot will do nothing but piss a crack head off. 00 buckshot is more ideal.

Anyone that says the word clip when refereing to a magazine is never a reliable source either. Though shooting different ammo through the same Sig is not nearly as easy as he makes it sound, sigs are great guns too!

:iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree:

when you use a shotgun at short range ( under 20 yds) you must actually aim !!! or you will miss and die :(

also what happened to H&K when i was actively shoting they were top of the line :confused:

I dont know his price range but H&Ks are more then double the guns we have been discussing. They are great guns, but not worth twice a sig, XD, or glock IMO.

How many crack heads have you stopped so far? They seem like a big problem wherever you are.

oh my god im not dissin any of you here but that was freakin funny.Believe it or not i did have 2 tweeker dudes try to rob me while home back in my party days about 7 years ago.One had a gun but i nailed him with fists of furry before he could get it aimed at me.They nocked on the door,i opened it because they looked like my neighbors freinds and next thing i know,30 seconds of chaos.I got the door slammed on them finaly and locked so i could run back and get my 12 gauge. When i got back to the front porch they were flying down the road in a truck. My neighbor used to sell plants and i think they got the wrong house. So hey, crap happens.Thank god i was all fired up from the gym, lol.I dont think they were going to shoot anyone, just hold them up but hey, screw em.Glad those rowdy days are gone.Kind of.lol

anyone got a S$W 500, i want to shoot one please ?

I handgun hunt for large game.....deer elk...ect. So I have a slightly differant perspective on things. Reciently I gave some serious thaught to switching over from my .454 Casul to one of the new S&W .500 or .460's (the .460 by the way is by far the superior round between the two)

What I found out, after a lot of reasurch and four or five trips to the range is that the upgrade isn't worth the bother. The .500 smiths are having reliability problems and a redesign (new frame) is in the works. Additionally...forcing cone and barrel wear is totally unacceptable.

So how's the .500 for a home defence round? Well.... out of 150 or so expieranced handgun shooters at the range I'm lucky to find 5 or 6 that are not intimidated by my .454 let alone a .500 and of those I've yet to find any more than 2 that can hit anything with it.

Proper gun control is about HITTING your target...not knocking it down with the shock wave....or relying on the ever popular 'Accuracy compensating' simi auto in true 'spray and pray' tradition.

I have the Casul of course and my light duty sidearm....a .357 python...both scoped for hunting.

Home defence?........ 2 wolves each over 150lbs and 7 other large breed dogs can be a very intimidating presance....
