Here´s a video of some wildcaught N. fuscotaeniatus. You be the judge, but the fish shown in the pics is most likely a crossbreed between a tyrannochromis type and a N. fuscotaeniatus.

One thing is for sure though... It´s not a pure fuscotaeniatus.

There actually is a lot of variation with both Tyranno spp. (maculiceps is no longer a valid name....macrostoma became nigriventer and maculiceps became macrostoma) depending on where they were collected.

Here is a photo of a wild T. macrostoma juv (3-4") from Likoma Island that we brought in in July 09.

Some that we've had only have the horizontal lines, others like this one has some of the vertical lines like in T. nigriventer.

Yours looks to be a male. If it colors like a fusco-its probably a fusco x macrostoma (both fish are being bred commercially in Asia)

If its light blue with a yellow belly, its T. macrostoma

My bet is that it is fusco x macrostoma based on pattern, shape....and the fact that a lot of the 'haps' coming from Asia are hybrids.

The picture you just posted is not the macrostoma, but a nigriventer, most likely caught at likoma island. It´s very easy to se if you´re dealing with a macrostoma type or a nigriventer type. Look at the snout. The macrostoma, maculiceps and polyodon has the ability to fold out it´s mouth. No nigriventer has this abiliy.

Look at the first 3 fotos here:

The first pic. is macrostoma.
The second pic. is maculiceps.
The third pic. is polyodon.
the fouth pic. is nigriventer.

Look at the mouths of the first 3 pics. They are nothing like that of the nigriventer.

Funny you say that-when we received this fish, I thought it was nigriventer....as the snout was a bit off. We contacted Stuart's facility (now run by his widow) and were assured that these are what they were sent as. Because the pattern is much different than the Tanz. nigriventer-we didnt question it further.

I don't believe T. polydon is a valid name any longer.

Here is Tanzanian nigriventer-

Thats right. The one just posted is also the nigriventer. It´s very very easy to see at the snout/mouth of the animal. Both the fish you posted are nigriventer types :-) They do not have the very long sliding pedicel of the upper jaw :-) Only macrostma/maculiceps/ployodon has this.

Dennis :-)

But i would very much like to see more pictures of your fish :-) You think you could send some to my email? Dskovdal5@live.dk
