hardy fish?

I would do a fishless cycle if I were you. The easiest fish to use is a convict, but then you are stuck with a convict.

Fishless cylce would be the best. Get a big uncooked shrimp for each 50 gallons and throw it in the tank with some old media or an old ornament. Keep testing and then add fish once the cylce is over.

If you have other tanks, put some of that media in your new filter, transfer some gravel, and you are good to go. Usually takes a few days for me. If you are doing a monster tank, put some feeders in there to cycle, remember to use prime before you add your monsters. The monsters can eat the feeders when you put them in.

do a fishless, that way when the cycle is over, you can add your fish, instead of 1 or 2 at a time.
i agree with using some older filter media and a decoration in the tank. you dont really need to use substrate

go catfish noodling and when you get a big one put it in the tank. it will cycle it real nice like. then when its done cycling eat the catish and the add smaller prettier fish

haha I think it might be a little too cold to go noodling in Michigan right now. Like we all said, fishless cycle with old media and either pure ammonia or shrimp

use media and gravel from a current tank. I use this method all the time, and it cycles my tank in a day.
