Has Anyone Cut the overflow box vents before?

If you have room I would build Durso Stand Pipes in your over flow boxes, it will eliminate any noise. I have them on my 500, with 4 1" drains running 1 1/4" DIY Durso stand pipes. The only noise you hear from my tank is the hum of the two Quiet One 6K's and water running into the sump. The water is only falling 3" into the overflow before going down the stand pipe.

What is it your trying to achive? I've read of guys cutting out every other tooth or the comb of the over flow box to pass more water. But as suggested earlier if you have smaller fish they may end up in your overflow.

My 225's overflow is cut like this. It was like that when I purchased it though.

The purpose is so I can leave 1.5" - 2" of air space from the top of the water to the top of the tank. Currently the overflow has one inch teeth which allows me to have 1/2 inch at the top of the tank. I would like to have at least an inch at the top to allow air breathing fish to come up for air. This tank will be for large monster fish:naughty: so fish falling in is not a concern. I was thinking of cutting with a jig saw but afraid it would crack. Someone also suggested to use roto tool with router bit. what would be the best option to do this?

thanks for the tips. I am planning to use the stockman durso pipe. I heard good things about them.

A Dremel or drill would be your best bet for cutting.
Instead of lowering the water level why don't you build some plexi boxes over your tank openings. The fish will learn where the air is and your water level wont look low.

I do this to alot of my acrylic tanks to lower the water level for large jumpers. Dremel with a rotozip bit works like cutting through butter :) ive cut out entire overflow boxes with them aswell. Ive also just drilled 2.5" holes with a drill and holesaw and covered them with a screen. Using the dremel and roto zip bit to cut the existing teeth will look the best. You can get the bits at home depot.

Thanks guys. I am going to give Wednesday advice a try. I don't have a dremel. Can I use my drill like a dremel?
