has anyone ever attempted to keep a striper. and does anyone know how to get fry?

just wondering.

You mean like A striped bass? If so yes a buddy of mine traded me one for one of my sunfish but I gave it back to him because it was very nervous and kept busting his lip open on the glass

i had an 8" striper once. it didn't do so well in my 40 gal tank. it never adjusted to its new setting and wouldn't/couldn't eat. my lmb and bluegill were too competitive during feeding time. i think its best if stripers and lmb are raised in the tank as fry...

they are too big and too fast to be kept in a normal tank. They get spooked easily.

thanks, i was just wondering where i could get a fry and raise one. i probably wont try it now but in the next few years. when i have a pond for it to go into.

They can reach 6' in length. Not a good idea to keep one in a tank no matter the size. They migrate between fresh and salt water too.

if people can keep barramundi and things like that, I'm sure someone out there has the proper facilities to keep a striper. Would love to see pics of something like that

I just picked up a hyprid striper about a week ago, and was coming here to ask the same question as you when I saw your post. I have him (4 inches) with two lmb the same size and he schools up with them and seems to be doing well. Eats frozen brine and frozen red worms with no problem. My LFS where I picked him up claims he came from a hatchery in Florida. He's pretty cool, and hopefully grows a little slower, and stays a little smaller then a pure striper

well it is highly illegal in some states to take fry from the wild, but i guess you could try a hatchery. i would not go with a pure striper myself, id go with a hybrid if i had the tank size. main differences are hybrids live in fresh water only, stripers can live in both, size and shape differ and hybrids are cannibalistic. hope this helps
