Movie called "Blackfish" ? apparently it features the Orcas of seaworld and specifically the one who's killed 3 people now? also curiouse what the fishkeeping community in general thinks about it? I had no clue about this film until a friend thought i'de already seen it asked me my perspective on it? mods not sure exactly where this belongs but since it does in some ways impact our hobby (imo) thought i'de post it here move it if you want it elsewhere.

debating if it's worth the hassle of a babysitter ect to take the hubby to go see this or not... is it actually a good documentary or just a political statement?

Yeah wasn't really sure where it fits since imo it made me look at my own tanks ect... particularly being a community of large predatory fish keeeprs ect.. other then orcas ect being mammals we're about as close as you get to "keeping one at home" I know we also have a few people here that work within' the zoo industry ect so wondered what some of them think ( if they have oppinions of course) NOt really a lot of discussion like this one opens up.. thought it was interesting.

sounds like a horror movie lol.

trying to remove politics from anything like this is like trying to pull Hay strand #345,989,679 from the barn.

Oh yeah.. just wondering if its an actual documentary... or if its just like a giant humane society commercial like some "documentary's" are.

Coincidentally, I just read a review that said this:

"The film is not all straightforward condemnation – it highlights the irony at the heart of the anti-captivity movement. If SeaWorld hadn't offered the general public an up-close look at these animals that were previously misunderstood as killing machines, killer whales wouldn't have captured the sympathy of so many humans. It was largely through orca captivity that humans learned just how harmful captivity can be."

It sounds like the director started off trying to make a balanced documentary but eventually came to the conclusion that captivity is not OK for mammals like this.

I mean, I'm not sure I'd even call it politics. I think it's pretty tough to argue that captive conditions at a seaworld are really sufficient for orca husbandry. This person pokes fun at the same animal liberationists who would condemn us for keeping a small goldfish in a large pond, but seems to draw conclusions about the adequacy/humaneness of something like seaworld.

Yes Ben this is what I'm referring too.. from what I'm reading the director seems to have started I guess as your average mom who took her kids to such things but then started to question it and somehow ended up w/ this movie ect.. seems like its "to good to be true" so was wondering what others thought, an if anyone seen it. Leaning towards seeing it... will def have to share if I do get too.

And def more a morals/ethics issue but lots of polotics surround whales in general and I can see either side of this issue contriving a "fake" movie to get people more up to arms ( not a fan of whale wars..)

Was also curiouse because so many of us here keep large predetory fish/animals I think this movie would touch close to home as they say for us in certain ways.
