For the people who have/had frontosa, has/is everyone happy with their fronts? Bad points to them? Good points. Thinking species only tanks here.

I have a Front only tank and I love it. They were skiddish at first but grew out of it. Its in a high traffic area and they dont seem to be bothered by people. I would definately say go for it:D

I love mine...........my 4 are with a bunch of mbuna and get along fine...........every once in a while slight fin nipping but fine after a couple days.............they are pigs though which is cool....:D :headbang2 highly recommended!!

I started with a dozen 6-stripe Burundi fronts. Liked them so much, I started up another tank with more than 30 Karilani (yellow dorsal) fronts. Liked what I saw so, I started up a larger tank with 11 adult Mpimbwe fronts. Now, the addiction had set in so, I started up a Kitumba front tank and a Black Nangu front tank. Next, will be the Moba front tank.

Sounds good. Glad to hear some more experianced fish keepers impressed with them.

Other question, Can I just use plain black sand and add a ph buffer?

Great Idea.. Would I need to replace them periodically? Or just keep rinsing and resusing.

Aragonite dissolves depending on the acidity of the water it's in. If your tap is near neutral, a fresh dose should last about 2 years before it needs to be replaced. The "dose" being a pound of aragonite per 10 gallons of system volume.
You need to get a 'feel' for how much your water causes a reaction in the aragonite. I tested my water monthly to determine the rate of dissolve of my aragonite. At the 2 year mark, I noticed it took more than a day for the aragonite to level out my pH after a water change. That told me to renew my aragonite in that tank. My tap has a average pH of 7.2 so, that duration of 2 years includes the tap pH, 2 30-40% weekly water changes, and a pound of aragonite per 10 gals of system (tank & sump). HTH

Also, keep in mind that rift lake keepers employ other methods, along with aragonite, to keep the proper pH levels for their tang cichlids. I also use alot of texas holey rock, cretaceous limestone fossils, fossil coral block, and moose/deer antlers to provide constant buffering of my front and tropheus tanks.

Wow, alot of info.

So oddball, are burundi a good front or should I go for mpimbwe? The others are nice, but more expensive and I'm guessing for the money you get knowing they're wild caught and maybe better colors?
