Hatiensis aka black nasty info

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you flatfishleo for the wonderful information . I started doing research and planning a new tank for one of these little guys and the video really helped ! Good luck jagster let me know where you order yours from.

In general, they prefer warm water, mid to high 80s, and tank mates are usually not a great idea. When young if they can't kill their tank mates, it stresses them into bloat. They are omnivores, and in nature they constantly graze algae, so a high spirulina pellet helps, along with regular feedings of thawed peas to help purge the gut. My male easily hit 14", female 10-12".

Lots of great info here to follow bud:) thank you AJ for posting my video, I was going to and good thing I read the entire thread first lol. People will help you with info as to how to care for them but not a lot will tell you why certain things are why they are and for a reason.

I agree with keepin the temps to mid 80's, low traffic area. And ensure to place them in a large enough tank that they can remain to grow out for at least a few months before having to upgrade or move. This greatly reduces the stress, therefore making your fish comfortable.
When you first get them, I feed flake only for a couple of weeks to a month. This is easy for digestion and allows for a smooth transition. Then I start offering my usual foods; NLS, hikari, kens fish foods. Once I've had them for few month and they've reached 5", I introduce massivore;)
Now mike is right about oxygen. You definitely want to plan on increasing the o2 levels. This is greatly important because of higher temps deplete oxygen levels.
If you have any other questions please pm or watch the video:) thank you and good luck

I tend to think that the lineage has something to do with it too. Some bloodlines are just stronger than others. I've had them in the past and did everything by the book and had nothing but problems. My strain now I've done everything the opposite and they're doing great. I keep them cool, low 70s with no problems. And breeding at that temp too. I did however lose my female as she jumped with the cover off.
I love these fish! As for no colour I disagree. They're black and white but my male has a bluish sheen on his back and the fins have a purplish copper irredescence to them. And as the male grows his caudal fin gets unproportially large and unpaired fins get that sickle shape. Awesome!

Thanks guys! I will be putting them in a 90 -125 to grow out depends on what I end up getting. Since everyone is suggesting gage I will definantly be looking into getting some from him depending on shipping costs and what not.

Are you in canada? I've got fry from my pair now that will be ready next month. I bought both f1 and f2 from gage last summer. To unrelated groups. F1 were big heads and f2 are his normal strains. My male is f2 and female is f1. So my fry should look really nice:)

I agree, genetics have some what to do with it also. Yes your right about that blue sheen very striking!
