Have anyone seen these before? , is the ray sick?

I tried posting about this same type of thing on my hystrix, except I couldn't get pics to turn out as well as yours does! I never figured out what the cause was either. My male hystrix, in the same tank, does not have them, and the female has them all over (they are popping up more since the first one started), and they are in a pattern running around her disk, too. Our water is hard, but I'm not sure if it would be the cause....? I have no answers, either. Just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone!

I don't have particularly hard water

Thanks, good to know its not only me ;-) , it does not seem to bother him as he is eating and acting normally.

yea, now that u mention it with pics i think my female motoro has this as well...shes only 7 inches but active and eating well. I wouldnt wry about it unless there becomes a problem.

ok so my female motoro started showing these round bumps a couple weeks ago, exactly like the ones in the OPs pics, she just gave birth to her first pup and the pup has them to. i will try and get pics tonight and upload em tomorrow.

Those little warts look to be exactly where the lateral line terminates in tiny pores on most batoid elasmobranchs. In my experience with husbandry of marine rays, we often see infections of the lateral line, but have no idea why. Is it also on the ventral surface (belly)? Can you see any kind of accentuation of the lateral line canals leading to the spots?

it looks like the opposite of HLLE.. since hlle is seen generally from nutrient deficencies in most fish.. ide look at nutrition, water mineral content, leaky electrical current... interesting to know sw rays get similar oddities.... one more thing to worry about with my rays. when sw rays get infections similar, when addressed do they heal up or is the damage permanent? or do they stay scarred looking?

I've never seen the pore terminus inflamed in a lateral line infection in marine rays, it's usually just the main lateral line canal and all of the branchings that get raised and bad looking. We normally leave it alone and it clears up on it's own, but in severe cases we have treated with antibiotic Baytril IV and it seems to get better.

Not sure those spots would be from electrical noise in the tank, seems too patterned for AOL, and the electrosensory pores on FW species are randomly and individually scattered across the body surface. Just my thoughts though! :)
