Having others take care of your fish.

I had my room mate watch my fish for about 3days and when I came home all my filters (in all 6tanks) were clogged with food, he tried to feed my GSP hikari cichlid gold. If he had actually fed him his proper food he probably would have popped.
Then the last time I went out of town for 3days and I told my roommate don't even worry about feeding my fish... Then the water was somehow so low none of my filters in my african tank were running... If I didn't have an airstone all my fish would have died.

But I guess what it comes down to is people who aren't fish people just don't get it, and probably never will, because to them its just a fish.

Sometimes its not even fish, once my roommate almost killed my ferret because he didn't give her water for a week. And once he almost killed my german shepherd because he had a party at the house with out telling me and somehow she couldn't use her back legs, couldn't stand or even sit up. AND of course NO ONE KNEW ANYTHING....

Wow, my roommate sucks now that I think about it.

so here's my story to tell,

i never worried about my fish when im out of town, because i know it clearly that fish can go without food for almost a month... but try to to push it for so long, 1-2weeks is alright and anything more would harm the fish... gastric? lols.. just kidding...

if you've watch nat geo and discovery, very often they will teach you smth about cold blooded animals, like snake, they will burn their fat and lower down their metabolism to go through the winter and come out of the cave when the winter is over and start searching for food...

the same thing applies to fish as well, when they are not feeding, they feed on the body fat.... just make sure you feed them well for the past few days before your out of town, and also remember to change the water, to make sure its clean and im sure they filter wont clogged if you clean everything a day before your out of town.....

the most important of all is to make sure the filter is working.. without the filter everything may go wrong.. :)

I had 2 35 gallon tanks set up in my old apartment i had with my sister, i took a trip to Texas for 3 weeks , leaving her instructions how to feed them,
I had guppies (dont remember how many) in a heavenly planted tank, i was breeding bettas and using guppy fry for conditioning them before breeding
had two ryukins in the other 35 and some anubis....

anyway when i got back my guppy tank was about 1/4 the way empty...i was like..wtf..went to look at it almost every thing was dead! a few straglers were alive in the dieing plants the bottom...when i touched the tank it was HOT.."some how" the heater got cranked up as high as it could go..(the other tank didnt have a heater thank god) i unplugged it (finding out later it still works fine) and dumped some ice in the top as i refilled the tank (not alot of ice ) the guppies that were left ran to the ice and started gasping around it , it took me a few hours to lower the temp enough to even get it to register on my thermometer, and another few hours for it to come down in to the 80s..i was freaked and asked her wtf hapend and she said she had not touched it ,nor did she think to mention this to me when i called to make sure she was taking care of them....

lost 90% of a very healthy fancy guppy breeding tank..:(
don't let any one touch your tanks unless your 100% sure they care about your fish
lesson learned...the hard way ouch

Ahem. Wife fed my fish and did a water change and even cleaned the glass. My tank never looked so good....with dead fish floating around. She didn't condtion the water.

if I'm gone for a few days, I don't feed 'em at all . . . if I'm gone for a week, my GF knows how much to feed, and also knows that it's ok if she misses a day . . . if we're both gone for a week, I use feeders, set to feed once a day at most

I had my father watch my fish for 2 weeks, and instructed him to feed them every other day. I wrote every detail out, how much, where to place the food, etc...I have 3 38 gal tanks. To my surprise, he actually did agood job. All my fish survived, and stayed healthy. Just goes to show you, once in a great while you can find somebody worthy of fish sitting....im pretty sure I just got lucky

Great encoragement guys, I already hear sit in my room and hear evil giggling and know my brothers feeding the piranha something thats bad for them that they will like. I think he can handle feeding them but now I'll be worried durring vacation...

I trusted my sister once...I told her 1 cube of bloodworms for one of my tanks and 2 worms for my betta(specifically showed her how to pick off a piece of bloodworm from a cube). Apparently she didn't remember and thought it was 1 cube a tank >.>

my finacee has watched me do it enough times that if i leave. and somehow forgot to mark out food in marked envolpes (i never forget that) she knows how many scoops in what tanks. of course water changes after the last time i had sergury she refuses to ever again do.
