But, what makes sense to me is that you will only use as many watts as needed to heat the water to the temperature setting. In other words, your 50 watt heater will use more wattage of course, but will generate heat faster. Therefore it won't be running as long as the 25 will be.
I sort of think of it this way...76 degrees is 76 degrees. It's going to take a certain amount of heat to raise and maintain the temperature from say 72 ambient to 76. How quickly you get there depends on how many watts you throw at it. Besides a few pennies difference maybe, the heaters should cost the same in electricity used.
Based on that, I would go with the 50. Having a heater get up to temp quickly, then shut down is better (safer) than a lighter heater being on for a longer time.

very sound advice. I think I will go with the 50w as what your saying makes sense. My fish are worth the extra pennies it may cost me
