If you have a sump you could just put the heaters in the sump

I've spent some time looking for heater guards too. I'm in the middle of completing a tank upgrade and while looking at a new filter that I need, I found this...a fluval 300w heater with integrated fish guard. I guess they've heard our cries.

Decided to go with a hydor 300w inline with my canister filter. Waiting for it to come in...

The tronic heater guards are discontinued. They are very hard to find in North America. I even looked on Ebay and couldn't find any. There's a new Fluval heater with electronic display that has a plastic coating around it.
