Heater shocking me!! Emergency

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a faulty heater a couple months ago. I went to do a water change and put my hand in the water and got shocked I was like what the heck I guess that's what I get for buying a cheap heater.

A cheap heater lasting a month is better than your fish going without a heater for a month

Temperature has only dropped a couple of degrees over the night. So we are still good. Like I said at the start of my thread...there is nothing close to me and the Walmart that is relatively close did not have a heater. If we can make it until Monday...we are good.

Well ya didn't answer either of my questions  so will just go with this. If you have a wet/dry sump they are bad for loosing heat. If you can seal and insulate around it or the cabinet stand. You can also place a standard trouble light(100watt incadesent bulb) under the tank, or even use a regular lamp with out shade.

Good luck, hopefully your tank is larger and won't drop the heat very quick, on the other hand if it is large it will take longer to bring the heat back up. Other things you can do, heat up rocks in the over or BBQ and place them in the tank or add near boiling water to the tank. The heat from the boiling water will dissipate quickly, but don't pour near any of your fish.

This tank has bio wheel filtration. Temp is hanging steady. Set the thermostat to 74 degrees. Tank is only 100 gallons.

Any mishap wih a heater or any electrical equitment can be avoided with a GROUNDING PROBE! 15-30$ at ur lfs or online, i got a titanium one a few months back after my circulator was leaking ac current. All it does is ground the tank!

A very smart buy imo!

I was wearing my docs and so I didn't realize that there was a problem with the heater initially because of my thick rubber soles. Good tip on grounding tank

I think the best tip would be to either put two heaters in your tank or always have a spare..
