has anyone had the same problem this has happened to me twice i woke up in the morning and went to feed my fish but they were mostly dead the water was extreamly hot i think the termostat had gone on it or something. Any lucky it was only my small comunity tank, does anyone know why this might happen or how to make sure doesnt happen again?

It just happens sometimes. We should all post the manufacturer, model, and wattage of this when it happens in case we see a trend. The manufacturer won't say when some bad "lots" got out into the public and we should steer clear of that type of manufacturer. I have never had it happen to me personally but there are countless stories on here about it. I believe one was posted yesterday as a matter of fact. Guy lost a bunch of pike. It's terrible.

Ya that sucks. After the first time it happened to me years ago I use 2 heaters on all my tanks that are both about 1/2 of what I need for that tank. That way when one goes haywire it should not fry the tank as it just does not have enough power. This has saved me a couple times since then.

Or you could just use a heater controller to operate your heaters. Then, even though the heater stays on, the controller turns it off. You could then theoretically use bad heaters and not have to buy new ones.

the problem was it was a small tank and only one small heater did the trick but in the other tanks i use a few small ones

Had it happen with a kit heater came with a 15 gallon I was using for quarantine. Ever since then I have used visi therm stealths(With tremendous success knock on wood). Well the exception being the hydor theo 100 watt I bought in an emergency tank set up (fry tank) The hydor theo is taking in water like a siv im returning that POS today,

It will electrocute you.
