Heating for 125g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a titanium heater with a ranco controller with no problems at all.

I am using one 300W Hydor ETH external heater on my 220G glass tank. No problems keeping the tank at 78F in a 68F room.

For non-canister filter tanks, I am using Jager submersible heaters.

I like to stay between 1-2 watts per gallon when choosing a heater. But then again, my house never gets below 60F or over 90F. The room temperature and fish requirements play a big part in determining what size heater you require.

Right now I am using two Eheim canister filters, a 2262 and a 2260 (just added). I also have two AC 110's for mechanical only. The Hydor ETH has the 5/8" fittings which fit the Eheim 16mm output tubing perfectly.

I love my ViaAqua. It's got an unbreakable metal casing and an external thermometer, with remote thermostat. It has served faithfully in my 55g for at least four years without a glitch. The rest of my heaters that operate correctly are Ebo-Jager.

My 125g has two Ebo-Jagers and one Tronic, housed in PVC. The two Ebo-Jagers took awhile to synchronize, but I've got them sharing duty. Both of their thermostat lights flick on and off. But the Tronic, while having passed the bucket test, does not always show its light when heating. I trust its ability to maintain a constant temp, but since it lies to me about when it it operating, it's hard to know if it is synched up to the Ebo-Jagers or just lurking in case one of the Ebo-Jagers decides to go belly-up.

Deed, did you happen to do a fishless cycle with that heater? 85deg? Please say yes! Lol gonna buy one today if u do:-)

i HAD one of the Hydor Theo heaters and will never buy another one. set to "78" and was still "on" with my tank at 84. i have a stealth noew and haven't had any problems with it yet.

I second this statement.

gonna be tough to get 85f out of an inline on your FX5, even the manufacturer rates it for 53-80gallons.

Deeda is running Ehiems which the water is flowing slower (more time in the heater) than your FX5...

you are either going to have to get a pair of submersable 250-300watt or make sure the room is as close to 85 as possible, then use a lesser amount of total watts...

3rd...1st W/C where the water went too low and pop! the glass fell off, to the bottom and bare wires were in the water...My fault totally, but we have all forgot to turn off the heater at W/C time, at least once.

I have had the 300watt via AQUA ti heater on a 150, and it worked perfect for a year and a half, then the remote thermostat went bellly up...

All the heaters have had problems for some people somewhere, but the best for me has been Marineland STEALTHs (non-Pro model) I had 2 x 250w on my 225 acrylic on a heater controller, zero problems...a

at present I have a 2180 Eheim w/500watt heater on my 225g and of course ZERO problems so far...

Thanks Zenn. That clears up a whole bunch. Looks like I will go with the stealth than. Any way that I can tell if it's a stealth pro or not? Looking to buy them off eBay. The pictures they have of the stealth and the stealth pro look the same. Any info would be great! Can't wait, my Fx5 should be here by Tuesday =)
