heavy rock in a tank.

Not that there is anything wrong with placing a heavy rock in the aquarium, but i can see where your fear stems from...

I've always personally placed rocks ontop of the substrate, although i know to some this is a big no no... this way at least in my mind if it does slip, its not as likely to just crack the bottom of my tank, and 2nd i feel more comfortable knowing its not touching the bottom directly so if it does tilt and fall from fish knocking it over, it won't crack as well...

But with the sort of weight your talking about, i would also be hesitant to place it into a tank unless i was 100% sure i could put it in and take it out with ease and no worry about dropping it...

That is why I advised him not to even think about it. This effing rock is over 30kg. One miss and it will break everything.

^ my own personal rule of thumb is if i can easily grip it with one hand, chances are i wont place it in my tank...

I have put 500 lbs of rock into african cichlid tanks (220 gallon) with no problem. I put a layer of egg crate down first to disperse the weight from pressure points and then fill in substrate around it.

Well, if it had been a rock for a SW, it would be more manageable as it has many areas to grip. Safety-wise, if he misses with this rock and bumps into the glass even a bit, he's screwed. And a 30kg rock without any holes (hence very dense) is just utterly useless but a waste of water and fish space. He would only uncomfortable looking at it at the aquarium and then maybe plan to remove it which is way more difficult. 0.02$

40lbs is only around 18kg. 2.2lbs per kg.

If you like the look of the rock I'd add it, I had a 50kg (110lb) rock in my tank for a long while without issue except getting it in and out.

He said it's 71lbs after weighing it again. <quoted below> Anyway, it's his decision. Why are we even discussing that effing rock? Hahaha! If he's comfortable with it, I'd say go ahead. Our tanks are made to handle more than a few hundred lbs of substrate and the water itself.

lmao. i just weighed the rock. no wonder why. it weights 71 lbs. i weighed myself holding it and it came to 246...and i am 175. should i still put it in?

Sorry missed that part.

i'd say it'd be fine, after all its just direct pressure down. its not like the water pressure pushing out against side walls outwards... if you get what i mean, like direct downward force... id be more concerned about the stand that its on if anything.
