I have wanted a hedgehog for a little while. Would one be fine in a 55 gallon?
And what kind of food do they eat? Oh and how much would one be

I think a 55 gallon tank would be great, but since it is a small mammal you should purchase a cage, since it is way more ventilated. Also check out this website

www.aqualandpetsplus.com if you scroll down towards the left side you should find "Hedge Hogs" great care sheet!

I have three hedgies. Actually my GF has 3 hedgies.
As noted you need a cage perferably about 2'x2'.
They sell hedgehog food, we mix ours with a nice premium catfood with a high % of protein and a low % of fat. We also give them chicken as a treat and even hamburger that has been drained and mashed with a papertowel to get all the grease out, but they only get it about every other month. Mealworms and superworms are good and I fed them a can of freeze-dried plankton that I needed to get rid of.
Babies you can usually find from a reputiable breeder for about $100 or you can find them on craigslist for cheaper. I would go with a breeder though so you know that they aren't inbred which from what I hear is very common.
The link Pazzoman posted has very good information.

Also you are going to want to get a 1' in diameter wheel for them to run on, a water bottle and a sleeping sack.

One of our hedgies is a special needs hedgie... He was stabed in the eye from a litter mate and is blind in both eyes(must of been stabbed in both I guess or the craiglister we got him from isn't telling the truth) so he can't use a wheel, but he runs circles constantly in his cage and bites any cats that are dumb enough to put their paws in it.

They are very sensitive to noises so keep the cage in a low traffic spot and also someplace with low humidity.

I saw pet hedgehogs at a pet show the other day for the 1st time. Tried picking one up and they stuck the crap outta me. Really hurt, but they are pretty cool.

The more they are handled the less they put up their quils and they also have to recognize your scent too. Our female is almost like a cat, you can pick her up everytime and her quils are always down, the males on the other hand are a different story.
Our female is pregnant right now and she stays in the same cage as our salt and pepper male. As soon as she is ready to pop he'll be moved of course. Females may eat their own, especially if you leave your scent on them. It's best to leave her be.

I wanted a hedgehog as well but I don't think they are legal in my state.
