Miguel I have a friend that has an aro witht that same problem, theyre almost like pimples on the scales right? Yours is rather young to be getting this.... his is much older. Hope it pulls through and let me know if they disappear completely. He would like to know as well so he can try the same method. Hes tried various things to no success. Best of luck!

Pimples on the scales, right, Alex. Everything disappeared but let us wait and see...after a lot of sorting things over, I felt more inclined to believe that the pimples were bacterial colonies...they start smallish, then they grow somewhat, react to the bassler formula ( malachite green, a hint of copper, methylene blue and formaldeyde ) but did not disappear entirely and suddendly started appearing on the aro's other side. In exactly the same place in the other side.

So I did what I started out refusing to do on acount of the sheer size of that monster ( which was taking her out of the tank ) and gave her a potassium permanganate bath.

Prepared a container with an airstone, put 100 litres of tank water in it, in went the aro, then quickly dissolved 500 milligrams of potassium permanganate in a bit of water and threw the mixture into the container.

Counted 27 minutes untill the aro started showing some degree of discomfort , picked her up with a towel ( because you don't want the potassium permanganate water in the tank, let the aro drip a little bit and put her back in the tank.

She is clean, for the time being.

But be advised that when giving such a bath one has to pay very close atention to the fish. One bit too much and they may die or get severe gill injury. On no account, so I understand, can such a bath take more than 50-60 minutes.

The aro is clean..almost one week passed by...

CONGRADULATIONS .. you had success and made her healthy again!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us you may help many others.

Well, two weeks passed by and the "pimples" are coming back, slowly. in EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE.

Aro continues to act normally ( she always did )

The fact that the "thing" is showing up in the same place confirms (imo ) that we're not facing a parasite, but something that is inside the fish and slowly protrudes through her skin...

Any thoughts on this?

thast crazy glad to see things went ok

Hey Miguel,

I have a red with the same problem, and I had tried everything, I have noticed that it must be bacterial and I believe they feed on protein and or other waste(organics) in the water. I do notice that if I get the water changer going 20-30% daily it get s better but for me changing 300 gallons a day is a little crazy I normally due 100 gals a day which makes for more than excellent water. I had moved red to the 230 gal for a month by itself the white pimples like stuff fell off during the move and never came back in the smaller way less populated tank. I tried treatments of salt, blue, green, and parasite clear, and withiun a month of being the the 550 gal again the pimples started coming back. Like yours very minimal only on one side and by the tail, and the only aro of 8 that has these symptoms. Let the research continue......

Best of Luck,

Hi Boydo. Sounds exactly the same as you describe.I have other five aro's in that tank and a Channa and none shows any symptom...

I have a regular wc schedule but even so I believe that it must be related to the big bio load in the tank..what is odd is that it only affects this one girl...

Today I am going to give her another potassium permanganate bath. 500 mg per 100 litres.

After she gets back into the tank I will add the mix of blue meth, malachite green and formaldehyde to the tank, together with antibiotic.

UV lights off and leave it like that for 3 days. Thereafter a major wc and repeat the treatment at half dose...

LETS JUST PRAY SHE DOESN'T JUMP OUT OF THE WATER AGAIN!
