Not overkill ... you need to look into the tank that it's supporting... it really is an amazing setup that John has... I'm sure he'd be happy to help you with your plans for your tank if you asked him. He's a Great guy for sharing his help and information on his setup.

i've always wondered about these skylight tunnels for lighting an aquarium.

how would they work for any aquarium and especially for lighting the depths of 7'? no expessive light bills for most of the day and natural light. being that this is a new construction, maybe it can be put into the plans...
i would like to know everyones opinion on this...
