Help! Added rocks to tank and killed fish?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not to sound like a jerk or anything but Koi need at least 100 gallons per fish. I think your lucky to made it this far with the variety you have in your tank. I would tear it all down and disinfect EVERYTHING since your not quite sure what killed your fish. Thats what I would do.

In the future I would not suggest boiling rocks they have exploded before and that would not be a good thing. As far as washing them with bleach I don't know if that would be a good idea either but I'm not sure. The rocks could absorb some of the bleach and release it in your tank.

I know that my koi needs a lot of space. My AST sits in one spot most of the days, but yeah with my EBJD in their it was crowded. and after a while I was surprised that none of them had tried to kill one another. Anyways, I'm going to empty it out and refill and dechlorinate and start all over... dang?/:

So far you shot down two ideas, with out giving one yourself. So how would you go about treating the rocks then?? Boiling water can cause rocks to explode, if you leave them sitting long enough. I probably should have metioned that, so good call on your part. I have boiled plenty of rocks before and haven't had a problem. As long as the water gets hot enough to kill of the bacteria and you don't let it sit forever boiling it should be fine, maybe it depends on the type of rock. Maybe I have just been lucky.. As far as 50/50 Bleach and water mix, it will work 100% of the time. That is why I said use dechlorinator.. Bleach is chlorine and dechlorinator will do what it was designed to do...

So I bleached the rocks also and tried adding vinegar, but suprisingly they actually didn't fizz. Checked my pH this morning and its down to 6.8 which is too low/: I think my tank just hates me...

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't koi, EBJD and an AST a really bad combo?

bleaching the rocks is fine. if you're worried about the bleach, let the rocks sit out in the air for a day or two. the bleach will evaporate.

koi EBJD and my AST is a really bad combo. I started out with like 14 little koi. I'm talking 2 inches- 3 inches and most of them got eaten without me thinking that they aren't agressive at all so they wouldn't hold their own against Bowser and my EBJD. Btw I know Koi require a ton of room. I let them grown in my tanks and once they reach decent size the next spring/summer when temps get consistently warm I take them out to my little Koi pond. (actually not so little)
