i just recieved a note on my door today saying im going to have an annual city inspection done on my 2nd floor apartment.........but i have just set up my new 125 gallon fish tank without permission. there is nothing in my contract saying that i cant have one and i have concrete floors. will my fish tank be a problem when the inspector comes? or is there any way to get out of this inspection?

Its a city inspection, probably to see if safety requirements are being met by the owner (To make sure he is not a slum lord). Most likely it is not being done by the apt owners. If your contract does not have a clause about fish tanks or water beds then I wouldnt worry. Just act as if it belongs and dont bring it up.

Man that sucks. What if you turned off your filters and pumps off and throw a sheet over it? Or possibly build a fake wood frame around it to make it look like a cabinet? Good luck, hope you and/or your tank dont get the boot.

lol.
It's easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission...

Just play dumb "Sorry, I didn't know!"

Lol yea, a 6' long 5' tall thing in the room with a sheet over it won't be suspicious...

don't worry, it's a non issue. They will probably just want to talk fish like any other visitor.

so I guess what I'm saying is, just make sure the the water is topped off, the glass is clean, and your ready for show and tell.

They are just going to inspect the home... checking the fire alarm, mold issues, have hot running water and things like that. Unless the lease says you can't have a fish tank... don't worry, they are not looking for that. Just checking to make sure everything is working and the home is habitable.

I did apartment maintenance for awhile and if this inspection is being done by the county, they will not care about the tank. What they are looking for are working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, properly maintained sprinkler systems, general "cleanliness" of the apartment(that is you aren't storing trash in the apartment or otherwise creating a truly unsanitary condition), and that the apartments are generally safe and well maintained. They are not looking for whether you are in agreement with the lease, just whether the apartments are following county code. So about the only thing you need to do is make sure your smoke detectors work and your extinguisher is charged. If these items are missing or not working, you can get a very large fine. I saw people get fined $1200 for taking down their smoke detectors($150 fine per detector, CO+smoke count as two and therefore $300). So test them now.

However, they may have a maintenance person following them around to let them into apartments and go over what needs to be remedied. But if there is no clause in the lease limiting aquariums you should be fine. Even if there is, maintenance guys usually wont care as long as you haven't been rude to them in the past.

You shouldn't worry if the contract doesn't state anything that is against having tanks in your apartment.
