Help arowana is getting down eye

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure what type you have but I've only ever seen 1 silver that didn't have droop eye. I've heard its in their diet, is the cause. If its just beginning your best bet is to find a good natural well rounded diet and you may be able to reverse it.

So if this is true then every silver but one has been fed a poor diet?

This has been debated over so many times.. The most plausible cause of drop eye is due to injury to the head..
I've an asian aro with one side DE so I'm pretty sure it's not due to looking down for food..

I didn't say a poor diet. But maybe its not a natural diet.... if you read my whole post you would have noticed I also said this is what I have HEARD I didn't say that is the for sure cause.
I simply was suggesting options. Also I have not seen every silver in the world, have you? From what I have seen myself yes there is only one silver that did not have droop. I have seen alot more black arows that the eyes were perfectly fine

From what I have read, it is more of a "trait" of silver aros. Almost all of them get it in captivity.

If no one can come up with a real, defined cause, and simply theories of why it occurs, than we can only analyze the facts we have at hand which are, it almost a certainty that it always occurs or inevitably will occur given enough time in captivity. I have two silver aros and they were both born together, one has it, one doesn't. I feed a fairly decent variety on a rotating basis which includes:

Hikari Floating Food Sticks
Hikari Massivore Pellets
Freeze Dried Blood Worms
Live super worms
Frozen Shrimp (thawed obviously)
Frozen Tilapia (thawed as well)

At this point, I have no expectations of the second guy NOT getting dropeye. I assume it will simply happen sooner than later.

All aro's seem to have the ability to GET drop eye, I've seen it on all types, golds, reds, blacks etc... however it does appear to be more common in silvers, as the vast majority seem to be affected by it.

It can't be from looking down for food, there are many people who have other types of arowana that have silvers as well, and it isn't like they treat them differently. Or perhaps it IS from looking down for food, but the silvers are affected by that much severely and develop this condition.

It all leads back to being something inherently to do with the make up of the silver arowana in general. We all take pride in our fish, and we wouldn't treat a silver any worse than a red or black per say. Or I would hope not. We do not opt for cheaper diets for the fish, nor do they really eat anything that different. So we can narrow down the field to saying there are perhaps many contributing factors, but at the end of the day it boils down to simply being that the silver aro for whatever reason does not handle these issues as well as his colored cousins and forms this condition much more readily and consistently.
