Help! Atlantic Stingray curling!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As a side note, using sand with an undergravel filter is not the best idea either. The sand will eventually works it way down through the filter plate, clogging the "filter".

The reading of .008 is specific gravity. What kind of salt are you using?

I measure amonia, nitrate, nitrite. The tank was cycles for 5 weeks with cichlids before removing all fish and adding the ray. It was definately cycled. went through a nice little bacteria bloom at first. And there are traces of nitrates and amonia, just not high amounts and its closer to the end of the week when I do the change. I've seen the nitrates get into "caution level" when I waited 10 days instead of a week

My problem with some of the responses is, why beat a dead horse? unless theres something I'm missing here, you change the water to REMOVE the amonia and nitrates right? so.....if there is NONE there, why upset the fish? The first time she started to curl up all wierd was when I did her 2nd water change. She continues to get "pissy' everytime I do it. But I keep a close eye on it. I seriously test it DAILY and the salt levels too. There are small amounts of stuff in the water by weeks end though, when I preform the change.

ya, I gave up on the sand idea. Im using instant ocean. Once a week when I preform the water changes, I mix in a LITTLE more salt than the week before. I assume since shes capable of surviving in freshwater, the change should be slow? I didnt wanna crash the tank. Those power heads for my undergravel are severe/ they do awesome! sp switching to sand, means switching part of my established filtration...naaaa

what the heck do you guys mean by gravity?

It is a measure of salinity, you are going to have a rough with with a marine tank if you do not understand the basics.

might do some serious research

well, i can measure the salinity just fine. Im not up to date on the FISH LINGO but I more than get the basics. I have an addictive personality to know "everything" about what I'm doing. Hence the 8 page thread

Gravity is the measurement of salinity of any given sample of water.

EDIT: Question already answered. That's what I get for taking time to eat goldfish crackers and feed stingrays while answering a question.

If you need a PHD in "salt tanks" no body would own them. Pretty sure everything is trial and error by research and previous mistakes. I have one stingray. Not a shark tank. And since I was lied to, now its too late and I already have the animal. and I'm relying on the internet and everyones whose been so helpful "thus far" for my RESEARCH
