Help! broken jaw!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Technology now-a-days must be making it increasingly more difficult to take pictures and post them online...

Hey spatula maybe ur right. And maybe ur just sitting there and waiting for time to passby. well unfortunately wer not the same, i am a busy man and i have to schedule things before i can attend to it. so if ur not so busy, then maybe u could go and take them pictures for me...u like that? :naughty:

Hey I had a very similar situation, a few posts back, someone said they had a gar get injured and it came out fine. I have craw fish in with my gars (they are only about 4-6 inches) and the gars and craw fish have never had any problems... Until a few minuets ago. Craw fish grabbed gar got on top and tried to kill/eat it( hopefully just minor cosmetic damage to the snout). When your gar got hurt, did it scar over, or was it a complete cosmetic heal. I have 3 small gar and while I bought them all at the same time, and they all come from the same nest, I thought they would be same size (When I first got them they were). However after a few months this is not the case. While I know its not ok to mix species can I mix multiple Florida Gar? They have been together there whole lives.

I finally got the pic. and SORRY if it took me 3 days to post it here...
Now I hope this can help. Hand feeding did not work when i tried, but i saw him trying to catch feeders by himself (still with no luck though)...
And I noticed that his wound is healing now compared to when i first saw it.

looks like a good tear. ur gonna have to starve him for alittle while to allow it time to heal some before it trys to eat again. should be able to heal though. time, temp, clean water and some salt should do the trick. wait for solomon to chime in though.

definitely understand the issue with time for pics man...i walk by the tanks almost every day and still don't have time to sit down and shoot pics and then process and post them (have been meaning to though). either way, thanks for posting as this will help greatly.

the break doesn't look as bad as i was thinking, it broke off a portion of the anterior mandible (essentially front-right of lower jaw). if it is healing already, just keep up with increased temp, water changes, and add 1tbsp salt per 20g...keep this up for a week or two and track its progress.

as for food, keep offering food as keeping it eating will help with the healing process; don't force it to eat though...it may just take time before it's able to successfully capture food; the fish won't starve to death in the mean time, just make sure it COULD eat regularly if it wanted to/was successful at catching food. it should be able to get food in a week or so.

keep us posted on its progress and although it will never regrow that section of jaw bone, it should be able to live and feed with just a little extra effort.--

damn, i was spot on except i said give it a few days without food and the expert said to continue with food.

oh well, im getting better :headbang2:

and solomon we need gar den pics.

hey Lepisosteus platyrhincus, you were 99% on the spot bro...just a little more to go and you'll be hitting the cherry :naughty:

Anyway, I could not thank you guys enough...specially to the master - solomon. I will be needing your advices from time to time man. and maybe in a few days, i could update some pics again so you could see the changes. Just sad to know that the damaged section would not regrow anymore.

So where's that gar den pics anyway? I definitely want to see that. :D

I agree w/ the experts.. I'de give him the chance to heal. also for feeding, I've had other fish w/ mouth problems in the past. I pre-soaked pellets so they where softer to take, and fed smaller/softer foods. It may cost abit more to provide the same amounts of foods in small bite sizes, but made it alot easier to get down. If he's trying to eat offer him food. depending on his size try guppies, or smaller rosy minnows ( assumeing these are the feeders you where referencing) if he takes nightcrawlers these would be nice soft tid-bits, again cut them up into smaller pieces then it normally would take.

GL! you can't imo go wrong w/ Sol's advise.

That gar looks like a fighter. I was expecting much worse from your description - I think he'll pull through as long as there is no inward infection that you can't see.
