HELP Bulging EYE on my JD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is generally the result of a bacteria infection. Often caused by over feeding, and/or poor water quality. You need to keep his water clean, add 1 teaspoon of table per 2.5 gallons, and use an antibotic.

As popeye is often a secondary infection cause by other far worse conditions. Popeye often leads to dropsy. I'd really reccommend using a broadspectrum antibotic.

Reccomended treatment
-Gel-Tek Ultra Cure BX (trisulfa, and nitrofurazone)
-Any Trisulfa medication (IE Mardel Trisulfa)
-Maracyn Plus
-The combination of Maracyn-TC and Maracyn
-The combination of Maracyn2 and Maracyn

1 tsp of table? you mean salt

i had popeye happen before gotta act fast it kills

I would a big water change and use Teteracycline, I would avoid using salt with the antibiotic. If your fish develops Dropsy you would need Epsom salt to remove the build up of fulids in the body but unless the abdomin is swelling and you notice the scales starting to stand up in a pine cone apperance then your dealing with Popeye which is an internal bacterial infection best fought with a gram negative antibiotic such as Tetracycline. This condition is usualy brought on by a lack of maintanance and detierierating water quality. Make sure you keep up with weekly water changes do not over feed and vacume the gravel every week along with the water change. GL

Tough one to cure - would've been easier in it's earlier stages IF the eye showed signs of cloudiness. Generally it is a disorder brought on by stress. Removing the cichlid into a hospital tank will greatly help - from what I remember the cure was a long term treatmeant of antibiotics - can take months with no garuntee of recovery.

had it happen to my old male convict a few months back after getting in the losing end of a fight with a tankmate, what I did was add salt, and kept the water in good shape...it went away after 2 weeks or so, and the fish is now fine.

yeah i just had this with my midas after slacking on the waterchanges, but his eye showed cloudiness before it started bulging out, but he had a double fungal and bacterial infection in the eye so i had to treat with jungle anti-fungus meds and then with tetracycline. he is actually blind in that eye now and it still looks a bit weird but he is back to acting normal and eating healthy so thats what matters to me :) GOOD LUCK i had my midas being treated in the hospital tank for like 2-3weeks so you just have to be patient and keep the water pristine during this time
