Help! Dat Dying

Hi all -

I just walked into my room to feed my fish and I saw my 4" dat that I've had for a little over a month lying on the ground, curled and looking as if he's gasping for air (breathing very rapidly). He is a NTT and is currently in a 125 with a 5" jardini and a 6" sun cat, which are both fine. His coloration is very white - it looks like his normal yellow color just faded. It also looks as if his slime coat is coming off. As of right now he is still alive, and when I tested the water everything was fine (pH @ 6, which is what it is usually at, nitrite/ammonia @ 0 ppm). Is there anything I can do to help him survive?

You said that he is breathing rapidly and now is turning white,you are probably too late to save him.He/she is being killed by the parasites in its gills and once you you see the gasping its too far gone.The NTT's are very succeptible to gill parasites,any that are purchased should be treated as soon as they are brought home.Do a search for more information.
 
I realized that they were susceptible to gill disease, but i thought that it would be apparent if the dat were flicking a lot. While I did see him flicking occasionally, it seemed normal, especially when I hit up this forum for info on dats flicking (at least from what people said). That being said, if it is gill parasites, should I do anything with my other fish?
Also, how can I know for sure that it is due to gill parasites (and which gill parasite in particular)? I did not see any of the symptoms usually associated with gill parasites besides the flicking but it seemed to be at a "normal level" according to posts in this forum. Also the black bars are still black, its just the yellow parts.

A good size water change wouldnt hurt as for the flicking,I guess they would respond in different ways depending on the level of irritation.
 
the problem is i just did a 50% wc yesterday - would a hastily set up q-tank be better than a full on wc (esp. in terms of the other fish)?
 
I had the sam problem but I think I had 2 seperate cases. My new 1.25" NTT's got what appeared to be pop eye and then right after they died(my 4" also died a few days later) my lil bass was breathing real heavilly and the next day he was belly up. No signs of pop eye on the bass. just gray spots and heavey breathing. I had the LFS check the gills and he said he was fine but I am positive the lil guys brought not only the pop eye but gill flukes as well.

IMO I think it's gill flukes.
 
all NTT IS HARD TO KEEP WITH OTHER FISH , because they are live in very hard water and coral and salt to make them in good health , but INDO IS EASY TO KEEP

This is not true. I have dats that live in full fresh water and they do just fine. I have had them for a year so far with no problems whatsoever

Agreed. Ntt is freshwater.

Not sure where your coming from Guy when u mention coral and salt? Check your sources perhaps.......

Back to heavy breathing ntt,.... That's not a good sign....
I used a product; kazuri worker plus , In uk. The breathing slowed down for about a week, but not enough..... And died.

Just keep water changes, add med.

I wouln't move to another tank, as this may stress him out more.
