Just wondering how some of you would setup the overflows and returns on my new tank. The tank is 120x40x30 acrylic. Gonna run a hammerhead return pump. Needs to set as close to wall as possible. Have a 125 gallon underneath as a sump. 4 filter socks and matrix. Can’t decide on drain style and overflow style and need to let the builder know soon. Have had tanks with Herbies, dursos, beans. Not sure if I want corner overflows or centered on back wall. Tank will be sand bottom, some driftwood, home to big cats, giant gourami, silver aro, a few other large fish.
Please let me know how you might do it if it were yours.

Thanks all

After getting corner weirs in my 450 I can't really recommend them, I wish I had gotten trapezoid overflows or external coast to coast but that wouldn't work for you

Why mess around? Might as well go with a 10' coast to coast external :naughty:

If thats not feasible, i would go with two internal trapezoid boxes 30" from each end, 3 1.5" drains each. Ive never had a tank that size though so you may even want larger drains.

eh I'm partial to double/triple semi-octagonal corner/middle overflows and bottom drill feeding into a center-fit sump.

I’d do a long coast to coast with a 2” bean animal setup for sure if I had the space, but the tank has to set close to the wall. It sits in a “hallway” and the 40” width is already pushing it.

You will likely need room on the backwall if you are doing something external coast to coast, ghost overflow, etc. That may not work for you.

I've seen internal coast to coast that drain to internal overflow boxes (with weir). This way you can have the tank closer to the wall.

My corner overflows are set 6 inches off the side panels. Cant say i love them, what do you like about a trapezoid and shapped over flow ? Sounds intriguing

One thing ive always wondered about C2C overflows is how do you determine how low the bulk head needs to be in order to maintain siphon ?

I regret not going C2C on my tank. The internal over flows feel like a huge waste in space.

I got corner overflows because I did not want any sharp edges inside the tank Unfortunately they cover half of the end panel and I lose viewing the trapezoids would achieve the same result but would not impact my view from the side

I thought having mine sit off the side panels would have been better than it sitting flush but it really does amount to the same loss in viewing area. If i could do it over i probably would try a coast to coast.
