Help guys, my RD is really worryin' me

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was told you can surgically remove a cyst or tumor like that, with great success.

that is, if you know what you are doing

If in fact it is a tumor/cyst, how successful one might be on removing it would depend largely on how far back in the growth starts.

Indeed.

However, it still provides an alternative action, as opposed to watch the fish slowly die.

(Don't mean to be insensitive in any way)

Yes, I agree.

Still waiting on the verdict if what I'm seeing is indeed a tumor.

So what is the verdict, is it indeed a tumor/cyst that we were seeing?

Is your fish doing any better?

I still think, if you have no experiences with removing tumors...contact a vet....at least they would have a BASIC idea on how to remove a basic tumor....

Vets do not generally deal with fish I would say try and do it your self. You might be better off calling an aquarium or sea world lol to talk with a marine/aquatic biologist, they may try to help without taking your money. Take an exacto knife and split off the cyst close to the gill plate. stress coat the water and leave the lights off for a few days. It's a good way to learn and could take care of the problem. You would be suprised at what injuries fish can bounce back from. I have caught northern pike here in Minnesota with arrow, .22 cal bullet scars and wounds from fish poachers.(I helped assist in a 4 convictions last year after watching them do it after about 8 years of finding their dirty work in one of my favorite pike fishing channels) They do have amazing healing capabilities. Just make sure you salt your tank to prevent bacteria and fungus attacks.

My first fh i ever had the same problem too when he grew up to be 12inch. I tried everything and it didn't work. Then a local friend whose been in fish hobby for years said that it could be my water. My water could have metals, like zinc, copper, lead and he said that when fish been raised in water like this. When they get big they will start to develop tumors like on there body. I told him i use RO water and add conditioners, but he says thats not enough to remove the metals. He told me i did everything right except aging the water. He said aging the water will remove more metals, but aged the water for at least 1 week. I did what he said and months by months the tumor on my fh started decreasing. 11 months later it disappear, but it does having scarring or shades of his tumor where it use to be at. This is how i got rid of a tumor on my flowerhorn.

I guess until we hear back from the OP, none of us can even be certain that this fish has a tumor.

Just to add to the last comment, aging water does not remove heavy metals. Fish can get tumors/cysts just like a dog, human, etc.
Wild fish also get tumors, and there could be many factors that are the cause of such growths.
