HELP!!! I bought 2 new discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hope it helped.. And I hope other discuss keepers can come and help you out in this thread :)

20G's is far too small for discus over 3". Consider buying a 55G tank soon.

How do you not research such a demanding fish (In your case) before buying it? These fish require 6.2-6.8 pH, soft water, weekly 50% water changes, and much more.

I do 90% weekly.

to breed. not to keep.

IMO, you need a bigger tank, and about 3 more discus though.

yea... i'mma get a bigger tank when the discus is gettin bigger! tnx so much! I really don't know that taking care of a discus is such a big responsibility... tnx again people!

i have a 40 g tank with 4 discus. i do a 50% water change every other day, and feed them blood worms and they are fine. Add some driftwood to your tank to soften the water, and make sure the temp is 86 degrees...about. if you want them to lay some eggs have a flat rock. Also, discus like to hide a little sometimes, so try to get like a cave...or just make one! Also, try to get discus in pairs, even numbers and discus certainly mix well!
and despite the fact they're small now, they're going to need a larger tank asap. I mean i know mines still a bit small but i'm working on that ;]

thats all my advice to you, as for the pecking thing, i dont know what to tell ya...maybe a hiding place for them will get them to calm down a bit.

From everything I have seen (in my own tank) and read... bigger tank is a good idea, discus do better in groups of 6 or more,(one per 10g) and they are always testing the alpha fish (for lack of a better term) in the group. 6 or more gives them a more secure feeling and also tends to spread out the aggression.
I didn't see where you mentioned the size of your discus. the larger ones will pick on the smaller ones every time.

Also, the "correct" PH is a myth, a consistent PH is essential however!!!
They can adjust to a wide range but they cannot take sudden changes and trying to adjust your PH to the "correct" value can cause those sudden changes. So just acclimate them to whatever comes out of your tap or wherever you get your water for the changes.

why do you have to change the water so much ??? i am interested in getting some, i understand alot of it but noone really says why so much water change as i only do a 10% water change a week on my african cichlids and the only thing it seem to do is calm them down. also how often should you clean clean the tank like gravel etc.....with your discus. it all sounds so hard lol i am hoping that once i read up and get things started its not as hard as it sounds
