HELP!!! I bought 2 new discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Discus are very sensitive to water quality particularly but not exclusively while you are growing them out.
I also saw somewhere something about a hormone they secrete that inhibits growth and the water changes reduce this. (I don't know if that is true or not)

why do you have to change the water so much ??? i am interested in getting some, i understand alot of it but noone really says why so much water change as i only do a 10% water change a week on my african cichlids and the only thing it seem to do is calm them down. also how often should you clean clean the tank like gravel etc.....with your discus. it all sounds so hard lol i am hoping that once i read up and get things started its not as hard as it sounds

Most of what you read about keeping discus are requirements for breeding discus. True, they are more sensitive to water parameters, which in some people's opinion is why constant water changes are a potential problem unless you know what you are doing, and the water you are adding is the exact chemistry of the water they are in. Constant big water changes can cause changes in tank chemistry, which could be more problematic than the gradual increase in parameters that are not "ideal" for discus.

my 3 discus are doin great as of now!!! and I don't have any problems with them anymore! they like their frozen beefheart food I made... and I do 50% water change every week... just trust ur instinct with taking care of ur fish...

PS. i didn't even know my water parameters haha... all i know is the temp... they're all getting fat and big... I'll update some pictures ok! also I didn't try to put some fancy chemicals on my water... I just put some chlorine and water conditioner... thats it hahaha...

so i don't want to breed them i just want to keep them so like for my cichlids i change 10% weekly but they are pretty tuff and i don't worry about them i just check the pH so is that basical whats i should do for discus ??

just keep the pH stable and the temp as stable as you can. Make sure the water you're adding during water change is the same pH as the tank pH. At least get the added water to room temp. They will tolerate higher pH if the temp is increased in the 84 and up range. I've heard of people keeping them in 86degree F water with a pH of 7.8 and they spawned.

yea... just kip ur temp to 86 degrees and ur pH stable... my discus is not for breeding its just for keeps... LOL... but if they spawned or sumthing... then i'll come back here and ask again! HAHAHA
