Hey all!!!! Been away all day and was worried about the babies the whole time.

No luck on the baby brine hatching yet. I've got chopped up bloodworms going on right now and they seem to be alright with it, they swim really fast through it. Again, they're still too small to tell if they're eating but, they are considerably bigger than they were when I saw them this morning....so maybe they are liking the bloodworms.

Is there a site or something that will give me the info for building one of those brine hatching devices?

Thanks for the offer B4L. I have my 75g in the setup stage at the moment, in a couple of weeks it'll be ready for me to move the big guys over and that will free up my 10g for the babies who will hopefully be big enough to set loose (with a divider of course:D). So, I think I'm okay for now, but, if I get into a pickle, I'll surely let you know since you're so close!

Oh nice lil upgrade for the parents they will love the 75g!

what you goona do with them as they get bigger got a bigger tank? or sale them? if you gonna sale or get rid of some let me know im down to pick one off you..good luck on the brine and hope u get that going.. other then that looks like u doing a great job..

Hey Ryan, I was thinking of giving them/selling them away if all 14 of the eggs hatched.

Only two made it, so I may just keep them.

I have a 75g right now that I'll be working on in the next few days so I can get the good bacteria going before I add the parents into it. It's still to soon to tell for the babies though. They are getting bigger, but having no knowledge of this process with bichirs, I don't know if its because they are actually eating the chopped bloodworms and that's why they're getting bigger, or if they are still surviving off of residual yolk from their eggs.

Anyway, there's a couple of peeps, you and SmokinCoco who were interested and you both live close, so let me think about it. It might be nice to know they're living in good homes nearby! :D

No worries on my end if you want to keep the babys....if only the two survive it would be kinda cool to have them grow up and be put back with their parents in the 75!

yeah if u have the 2 babys better off keeping them in the 75 with the paretns hopefully they will make it all the way thrwew i think they will seems to me ur taking great care of them so far...

I was under the impression that the parents ate their fry.

They do. So, I've kept the fry separated. Sad days guys...one of the fry completely went a.w.o.l. . There's no way for him to get out of his nursery so I can only assume that the bigger guy ate him. I was under the impression that I'd have a little time before I'd have to do any separating, so I didn't...now, I feel bad. I've looked everywhere for him and he's nowhere to be found.

The Number One is still thriving and he just chowed down on some baby brine. If he ate his little sibling, then I know he's not that hungry. :irked:

Anyway, there's the latest. My camera's in the shop getting fixed otherwise I'd post some pics. Thanks again for all the encouragement, but, I'm still a bit bummed about the missing baby. I was so hoping to have two make it out of the 20 or so eggs that my lady bichir laid. I guess this is just nature doing its thing, huh?

Actually I don't think you need to be sad at all...think of it this way:

a. you have a confirmed 'mating' pair of polys.
b. you now have some personal experience in how the fertilization process occurs.
c. you have a much better understanding of how to rear the eggs once fertilized.
d. you have at least one baby that appears to be healthy, growing and EATING!!!

The way i see it....if even only 'Number One' survives you have succeeded further than most on this forum so congrats are in order! Just keep doing your best to take care of the survivor. You never know how many more times your pair will mate. Think of this as practice for both you and them as they don't really know what they are doing yet either.

Awe, thanks CoCo. I am feeling better now after reading your post. Hmmmm, Number One needs a name, any suggestions?

Oh, and with the exception of almost flooding my house (long story), my 75g is running strong. Going to get substrate in there in the next week or so, then some plants to help with the bacteria. I'll put up pics when my camera's fixed.

Glad I could help! As Moonchild said practice makes perfect and fortunately for us we can learn from you! lol

As for a name...I'll have to think about that one. :)
