My lfs used to have a red tailed chelseas and now they have fish labeled a gold shark. They have longer bodies with some teeth and both are freshwater. I am trying to find info on the net about them but I cannot seem to find anything.

Do these fish have different names or something?

They look just like the chalceus but without the red tail. Thanks for the correct spelling by the way!

After doing some research. I really want one. They seem to be great fish. I have a ZZ flowerhorn, gold nugget pleco and senegal bichir in my 90g at the moment. Maybe a chalceus would be good addition.

I think I figured out what it is. I believe they may be maroon sharks. My LFS has 3. Looking up some info they seem to get like 2ft big.

What is the scientific name exactly of the fish in question? Common names....I hate them sometimes.

It would be easy if I knew eh? I just dont know. All i know is its called a gold shark, and look similar to the chalceus and the maroon shark. Same body style.

What I consider to be "gold shark" or "golden shark" is Leptobarbus hoevenii. I don't remember these having teeth. Chalceus is also what I was thinking but which species?

I've never heard of any freshwater maroon shark. (It's why common names suck.) Are you sure they don't have red color on the tails? It could only be washed out for a moment. Fish in stores don't usually color up well until they are fully established and comfortable.

Can't you get a photo of these fish in question?

Look into the genus, Brycon. Possibly one of them if not Chalceus. Their taxonomy is messy.
