well i have a 180g, but i have other fish in there too. so i wouldn't be able to keep them all to maturity, but i can keep them for a while - allowing me to get a definate pair. i have a spare 55, so i could put the rest in there as i am sure i have two pairs within the 5, maybe keep the best looking pair and sell the other. GT's are quite rare where i am, and my lfs has said he will pay £3 per 1" fry. so i may keep both pairs.

what is the best way to grow GT fry, i.e how long to leave them with the parents? i have them in a comunity so they would get eaten in a flash if the parents left them.

I've always left them with their parents until they're about 1/2" but it's a lot more work trying to keep them from getting sucked up in the filter or getting eaten. I would save yourself the trouble and put them in their own tank with a sponge filter. They like to lay their eggs on something flat, so if you put a flat rock in the tank they might use it. Then you can move the eggs while they're still stuck to the rock. I've raised about fifty in another 55 gal. to 2 1/2"-3" before selling. You should end up with twice that many if you keep them on their own and don't kill them.

Put a pair of pantyhose over the filter intake and let the parents raise them to a 1/2 inch and then separate them if you want to. My female would lead the brood around the intake area in the tank like she knew they would get sucked up (I also never covered the intake end).

That's one to go but it gets clogged like every 5 hours. Also that wont save them all, they still get stuck to the pantyhose.

We have eggs!! The large male, who has grown tons! Has spawned with the smaller female. Which i am glad of as she is loads more colourful. I guess he was rejected by the larger female. I guess the cold water changed work, maybe a little too much so. As not only have my gts spawned, both pairs of my cons have (pink and black). The pair have coloured up dramatically. The female is soo fiesty, especially towards me! The male is helping out more than i expected, he often fans the eggs, and chases everything! Including the small tetras. He particularly dislikes the other males. I didnt anticipate them spawning at this size, female is about 2.5" maybe 3" tops, the male is probably pushing 4,5" - 5", i probably underestimate. They have spawned at the opposite end to the filter, so hopefully they wont get sucke up!

Wow, that's great! they should be fine at that end of the tank, the other fish won't let the Mom lead them to the filter. Now if you can just keep the other fish from eating them.

The other fish dont really have much of a say. She is soo fiesty. Even to the much larger fish. She has a damaged pectoral fin (it is pointed downwards from a birth defect i presume,i got her that way anyhow) and i thoight this would affect her ability to protect the eggs, but it really doesnt. I have another tank cycling ready for when they are free swimming.
