And that one doesn't have the blue spangling on the fins or body. It looks like a tall bodied female with a little hump.

:iagree: it's not unheard of for females to grow a hump and or grow taller bodied as they get older. Especially if you have 2 females...it's not unheard of for 2 females to pair up and one take the role of the more dominant of the 2...basically acting as the male. no, it's not going to change gender or anything but could definitely take on more masculine behavioral traits and physical characteristics such as a nuchal hump, etc.

I agree at this point.........................vent red terrors morph their colors quite frequently.

Festae can change color but ime they typically don't completely alter their pattern all that often. I kept a pair for several years and the male would only show black vertical bars when they were breeding. And I've never seen a male with black or blue in the dorsal fin aside from the normal blue spangling. The female I had, depending on mood, could be anywhere from a more yellowish/gold color, to orange to a bright red.

IMO these are 2 females. :)

How about sexing juvies? My LFS just got some in $12 per, Bout 2" and in a dark tank so its hard to tell. I do believe they are true festaes though, due to the spot on the tail. Any tips on sexing them? I want a female.

Sorry but at that size they're nearly impossible to sex...around 3.5" or so is when they'll start to show characteristics of male or female. For males, I look for the blue spangling on the body and in the dorsal. For females, look for blue or black in the front of the dorsal and in the pectoral fins. :)

Depends on their quality at that size. High quality female festae can develop the black dorsal at two inches. I've got pics of 2" F1 Rapps festae to prove it. If not, buy about 6 of them and let them grow a bit. Later on, keep the ones you want and sell the rest.

Those are hard to tell the sex of, I have 6 festae growouts that are 3" and I can only tell the sex of one for sure.
