Help Internal Parasites....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok so sorted now.
i looked at its waste today and it looks alot better. its gone back to its curling mode. but it is still a bit white.
So for any australians reading, You can not buy metro straight away.
You need to go to a vet and get a prescription, which isnt easy eather as most of them dont know the first thing when it comes to stingrays.

Lucky for me i found someone on a local forum who got some from his vet. and is going to send me some.

IMO i think ray is fine and if dose with this metro do you know what you are doing ?
good luck

Well im not going to dose it yet.
If i see the waste go stringy again, im going to start dosing.
But for now i just need the peice of mind that i have metro on hand, as its not easy to get around here.
As for dosing from what i have gatherd most ppl mix it with the rays food for best results? is this true?
But i will deal with that when the time comes. (fingers cross it doesnt).

I have never had problems getting metro from vets. They have always sold it to me no worries...but the guys on the forums are great as they sell it for basically half of the price.

When I have used it I have mixed it with the food.

Get a sample of it, and compare the slide under a microscope to images of known parasites. Once you identify the problem, it is much easier to fix. Honestly, rays are expensive and worth the effort, and microscopes are cheap- as is a parasitology reference. You can get both on ebay relatively cheaply.

Save yourself the headache- know for sure.

Okay got some pics,
I started to treat with metro (flagyl) which was a mission to get a hold of.

Now what are the PRO's thoughts on this waste matter.
It is white and string.

Also i noticed today a small amount hanging out from my young Males butt.

Is this the metro working? or should i just keep dosing.
Vets here do not no anything about this sort of thing, so i am very limited in my options and available meds.

I am dosing them by one Metro tablet in a small amount of water and soaking their pellets in there for about 30-45 min, and they eat it up straight away. anyone see a problem with this?

Im doing a water change now, and adding salt, the temp these days have been about 25-26 degrees celcius due to it being winter, im going to try bring it up a few closer to about 29-30.

They male (in pic 2 and 4) eats well, but not as well as my other one.

Can you look at the pictures below and tell me if it looks normal to you?
Diet is ONLY a mixture of hikari sinking massivore and sinking cichlid bio gold.

Cheers for the help dudes!!

I wouldn't dose with metronidazole if I wasn't 100% sure that my fish are suffering from flagellates. No need to get it of a vet BTW. Your own doctor can prescribe it. Brand name is Flagyl and there are numerous generics. You don't mention how much you dose so I cannot comment. Metronindazole is pretty hard on your filter bacteria so keep an eye on water parameters.

I don't know if Sera products are available in Australia but they have a new product called Sera med professional Flagellol. A lot of discus keepers swear by it .

Here's the link to the product information http://www.sera.de/index.php?id=709&L=1

My GT wasn't growing for a few months and I noticed that it often had white/clear waste hanging from it. It's appetite was also greatly reduced during this time. However, this past month it's waste has turned to normal and is eating like crazy as well as growing again.

When the GT was displaying signs of an internal parasite, I was going to dump some meds in there but now I'm glad I didn't. I guess it's possible for a parasite to pass out of a fish?
