i would say that the planaria outbreak was because of the ammonia.
they like poor water quality. once u get it back up to par they will go away.
water changes are ur best bet to get rid of the ammonia. dont mess with ur filters too much, u dont want to kill any bacteria.
feed very small amounts to keep the load down, so ur filters can catch up.
