I don't think he meant just throw it in the lake and leave it. You would obviously retrieve the container. That's just common sense.

There's plenty of idiots that would just toss the can out there.

Chicken livers are good. I like using them. The only problem i have with them is staying on the hook when I cast. haha.

My only fishing spot is a river and catching cats can be difficult, so gl to ya.

Yeah, its not as easy... Thanks for the GL bro.

I'm sure there are. However, passing that out as advice would be just plain asinine and I don't think this guy was doing that. Besides, I wouldn't take that kind of advice even if he was. :chillpill:

lol, please don't litter, I attach the can to some fishing line. I never thought about that being illegal, i'll have to check that out.

you can make some liver/stink baits with garlic and some other things...i didn't have time to on my resent trips so i just used reg chicken liver...i got a few...try to find a creek or stream enterance to the main river and fish it...cut bait works i like to use more oily fishes like mooneyes or sheephead... if you are using suckers just leave it whole and alive they work great...it could be the section of the river you are fishing...try to find a map of the depths and try to hit the heads of the holes...i am at the head of a hole and at a spring enterance with the main channel within casting distance...

i fish another section of the river and in the 10+ yrs i have fished it i have caught 3 cats 2 channels and one flathead... that section is a 5' sand flat with some rocks...yet if i move a few miles down river i get atleast one cat a trip...as cats like to stay by deeper hole for their wintering...

if you go out do it in the 12:30-5am time frame as this is when they are most active this time of year...

i have seen that you venture into MN from time to time so i say if it isn't to far hit the minnesota river...lots and lots of cats and big cats there...i'll post the name of the town that has a flathead compition and they get 20,30,50+ pound fish out of that area witch isn't that far from the dakotas...

You are usually pretty limited from shore but the best bait I have used for cats in rivers is shad or skip jack one of the two. Everytime I go to the river the fish bite way different than in lakes and ponds. They just take it in lakes and dart with it. In rivers I have found that they just simply eat it and bend your pole a little bit. I have caught little channels and a 10 lb drum and they both bit the same way. Might not be the same with everybody but its my experience. Nightcrawlers are usually a sure to catch bait too.

Thanks for the tips bro. Yeah I do frequent Minnesota as its where my parents live. I live in ND, and I don't have a boat here so I am trying to learn the river so that I can fish here and back at home.

I'll look around and see if I can find a map of this section of the river. I know of a hole by a friends place, but we've got so much rain in the past few weeks, the river is up and wider than normal and I won't be able to cast to it, so for now I'm stuck guessing.

I'm interested in the town on the MN river that you mention. I'd love to land a big ole cat like those!

Definitely limited from shore, especially since we've got so much rain lately. I'll do my best to find some good spots though. Thanks for the tips. I'll keep you guys updated and let you know how I do this weekend. :D

I used to bounty hunt shovels and bluecats for pay lakes in Ohio. chicken livers are okay, but you might want to take a little piece of sewing thread and tie them on the hook. Shad work really well too. Also, creek chubs that you slit the stomach open and then curl them on the hook works well. For channels though, prob night crawlers work the best.
