here at yuma on the river they told me for channel cats to use mackerel and for the big blues and flatheads to use live blue gills were on a river would be a good place to catch the big boys and wat time of day and also wat would work better than mackerel?

The general consensus seems to be that the larger cats move in at night. The little guys scatter at night because I suppose they are lower on the food chain.

I've never used mackerel or blue gills as bait so I cannot comment on that. I do know that the chicken liver works well, and so does jumbo shrimp (raw). Night crawlers work ok too, but I definitely had more success with the liver and shrimp.

For rivers, try to find a hole. A deep hole will hold the bigger cats during the day. Fish just in front of the hole so that the scent of the bait travels right down to them. If you don't know of any holes, then you'll have to do like I do and read the current. Fish any back pools or slow moving waters where the cats can rest out of the main current.

Good luck man.
