what about a nandus nandus, leopard ctenopoma community in a planted tank, it would look pretty cool only thing is they arent the most active fish until feeding time...

Flowerhorn... IMO it's an ugly fish...lol... sorry but i prefer a JD or a Green Terror.

About the ctenopoma, is not what i'm thinking... i don't want my aquarium have a lot of hidding places, and i prefer a more active fish... but thanks for the different opinion...

honestly i would try a texas cichlid,on average they top out at 9 inches but are capable of reaching 12.How wide is ur 40 gallon?
A pair of salvini, or a pair of dwarf pike " notopthalmus, or 1 female parachromis friedrichsthalii.
nonn cichlid you could do congo puffers, ery ery (hi-fin wolffish), gulper catfish not really aggresive but chances are it will eat anything you put in the tank.
a pair of neets or a pair of convicts, some jewel a couple of jewels species are very aggressive such as the five star general aka five spot
