Help me I messed up 0_o

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I usually just work with bettas, I mean the thing is I know not to make the mistakes I did, but I did, cause my wife was all excited about getting the ones she wanted in the store, so I was like Dammit! >.< I gotta buy em. But yeah the shark is doing ok I will get him two tank mates for sure, and heck we will moving into a house in a year or so anyway so if they get bigger I can get a bigger tank for em and trade or sell one. Cherry barbs are cool but I think they maintain a relatively small size as far as I know. Yeah I was thinking to put the little ones in the ten gal too. I will probably house a betta in that 2.5 gal even though they don't need an airstone or filter it can't hurt. Plus I can buy an expensive betta now!! :woot: wife permitting that is..-__- eh ok maybe not, baby on the way -__- but thats exciting too! ^_^. All in all I think I like these Irid sharks and they are my first MONSTER FISH I got the tank decal on the 20 gal, and I am putting my car decal on the cherokee sometime today when I get off work, thanks for all the input folks! Hmm I wonder how long we can keep this thread running?

Some threads seem to run forever!!!! Congrats on the baby! :) That is exciting!!! Also congrats on your first monster fish! I love this hobby and their is a real sense of accomplishment when you get it right! It can be expensive but most hobbies are and the gratification is great! Good luck to you!

I think if I were you iwould see about trading him back for a pictus catfish, they very seldom get bigger than five inches and are peaceful with fish to big to eat.

Don't get pictus cats with gups and tetras. The gups and tetras will be gone in the morning. I had that problem once. Pictus' are beautiful catfish, very active. But I had some neon tetras and they kept disappearing at night, with no signs of a body or anything. I called a LFS and they asked me what was in the tank. I started naming the types I had at the time. As soon as I mentioned pictus catfish, they said that's the culprit. I traded them to that LFS for some store credit and my other smaller fish stopped disappearing. Kinda funny now that I think about it.

Hey there, I own a Bala Shark, great fish, I've had him for at least 12 years!

One thing you will soon find out with them is that as they get larger they are very skittish, especially on their own. I originaly had mine with a couple of others, but I left my sister to look after the tank for a few years whilst I was living elsewhere and couldnt take the tank(she isnt the best fish keeper) and now I only have the one left. :(

He is now about 11-12" and is in a 120g tank(4'x2'x2'), this is really too small for him. They are very fast swimmers and when they get startled(about 10 times a day!) they dart very quickly across the tank, often bashing into the glass or ornaments, or else they jump, and I mean JUMP! Mine has hit the roof on occasion jumping out of the tank and has landed 5' from the aquarium! Usually only jumps when I am trying to do a water change or clean the tank. I think he would be less skittish maybe with a couple more Bala's to school with but I dont have the room unfortunately :(

So basically to house them responsibly I feel you'll need something at least 6'x2x2' when they start getting larger, they need at least a 6' long tank to allow them to dart across the length of the tank, otehrwise they'll be forever slamming into the end plates

Here's mine:

Ok CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!! :swear: :( DUDE!!! Ok problem two of the tets in the 2.5 gal are acting like crazies, they are bobbing all around in the tank flow, and are well just all over the place!! IS there something wrong with their lateral lines!!??? Or their swim bladder!??? :WTF: Help me! :help2: :wall: I can't believe this, now the tets get goofy!

Have you got any water test kits? Seeing that you are setting up new tanks, you will need to monitor the cycling process, trying to determine whats wrong with a fish behaving strangely without knowing any of the water parameters is nearly impossible.

My guess is an ammonia spike possibly? I'd try a 50% water change and then get ammonia, nitrite test kits and test the water. Eventually a nitrate test kit will be useful too but that can come a little later ;) I'm not sure about how your fish tolerate salt but adding a little salt can help the fish through as well, I use 1tsp per 10l whenever I do a water change.
