Help me plan my move.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good points above.
I don't think anyone has mentioned purging the fish, not feeding them for a few days prior should reduce the waste output somewhat. As should keeping the water on the cooler end of their comfortable range. The cichlids will definitely need aeration but I believe the polys should be fine without it given their wonderful lungs.

As for filtration, I'm not keen on sponges for big fish. When I do rescapes I run a pump or airstone next to the bag of ceramic media from my filter to A: Keep fish alive, and B: Keep the bio alive. Kills two birds with one stone and should be more effective than a sponge. Just a thought :)

I don't have any advice that hasn't already been offered, just wanted to commend you, you are a braver soul than I am. Every time I move I end up selling my fish, and regretting it. Godspeed!

Actually fish are hardier then we thought...

Jaws777 you can consider to ask your LFS help you pack your fish with enough oxygen for 48 hours... You be surprised the package won't be very big... is just like buying fish online but you doing self delivery lol

I managed to pack 2 baby pearl stingrays and 10+ cichlids about 3-4 inches with oxygen for at least 72 hours in a hand carry luggage.. oxygen supply claimed by sellers

Yup good points bud. I made sure to purge them the last time we moved.

Ugh to be honest i get anxious just thinking about it. Its not just the transportation if the fish. Tearing down the tank in the last minute cleaning it out all before the movers can pack it. Thats a whole nightmare in and of itself.

Everyone has their favorites so there would be world war 3 if someones favorite didnt make the cut. Told the wife either they all go or none.

What you need would actually be only a oxygen tank and big plastic bags and rubber bands.... don't think it be too costly

i didnt think oxygen tanks were easy to get. I assumed you needed it for medical reason lol

I've just moved house so I know what you are going through. In the end I gave my fish away and will set up a new tank once we have settled in properly. Tank is currently empty and it's giving me something to look forward to once life returns to normal.
In your situation I would see if a store in the new area can babysit the fish for a while and either ship or take them there personally before the move. No doubt someone on here would be able to recommend somewhere close to your new neighbourhood. It will give you time to set up the tank without rushing and stressing too much and also get all the other stuff you need to do done.
Nothing runs smoothly during a house month especially with kids (or a wife like mine!)and you need to expect the unexpected so if you know the fish are in a good temporary home it will make things easier mentally and take a lot of pressure of of you in what will be a high pressure few days anyway.
Good luck with it all.

Ugh man the wife !! Im going to reach out to a vendor that is down there and see if he is close to the new house and would be willing to babysit. You know exactly what im thinking of. Im imagining setting the tank up movers all over the place kids and wife going bonkers. Leveling the tank would probably take forever. How many times is she gonna ask me to do something lol

I moved out to Germany from the UK, going there was successful coming back a complete disaster. My advice with a move that's 15 hrs away with a day or two delay would be to sell the stock. Moving is stressful enough with out worrying about fish.
