I don't think anyone has mentioned purging the fish, not feeding them for a few days prior should reduce the waste output somewhat. As should keeping the water on the cooler end of their comfortable range. The cichlids will definitely need aeration but I believe the polys should be fine without it given their wonderful lungs.
As for filtration, I'm not keen on sponges for big fish. When I do rescapes I run a pump or airstone next to the bag of ceramic media from my filter to A: Keep fish alive, and B: Keep the bio alive. Kills two birds with one stone and should be more effective than a sponge. Just a thought
