Hi everyone, although we don't have any unusual fish, I do have an unusual dilemna. My hubby is in the US Navy and while stationed away from home for a year he got into keeping fish, mainly just Lake Malawi (sp?) African Cichlids but they really made his time go by and he really enjoyed his fish.

Well now he is away on a ship in Hawaii, (we live in Florida) and REALLY misses his fish and the relaxation he got from watching them. The ship he is on is a small one and it is quite rockie, rocks about 15 degrees. Is there a sealed tanks out there, other than those betta wall bubbles? Is it even possible?

I want to find / make / have someone make something for him that is not big, maybe hold 2-3 small fish but all the rocking of the ship makes regular tanks out of the question. I thought this would be the perfect forum as it states you all are pretty much addicted, just as my hubby had become. His job is very stressful, and being away from home permanaently for up to 3 years makes it even more stressful, I really want to find something for him, I hope you can help me.

 Tris

i would opt out glass. he could try a plastic container or a rubber whatever ( english is not my language, sorry ). He would see the fish from above, unless you get one with a transparent side panel ( window).

Depending on available space i would go for bigger than smaller..i think it would cope better with the rocking....

Heck I might be able to design a tank that would work without a pump... I'll give it some thought.

Does it rock 100% of the time?

I'm thinking you could possibly use a "Deep Rock" water bottle. Not sure about filtration or heating though.

It really depends on what kind of fish you want in the tank. I'd think coldwater would be better since you wouldn't have to worry about heating.

hmm if it rocks most of the time then piles of bio media like lava rock on both ends of the tank, the rocking does the motion, in turn doing the bio filtration....idk how mech filtration would be done, but you could probably get away with just a small powerhead to do all your filtering.

I don't remember the name of it, but there was a show on tv where a guy designed an aquarium for a yacht. He used a type of gyroscope to stabilize the tank and keep it from rocking. So who is going to build one on here?

I would double check his ship's policy before you ship it, good idea, but may be against procedure to keep pets on the boat....

OMG that would be incrediable! The ship always rocks, however only during rough seas is it so bad or constant. It may be that my hubby is somewhat exaggerating as he has only been on Aircraft carriers and this one gives him sea sickness (should be fun for a 2-3 year tour .. lol)

Luckily they are ok with it as he has his own office but they are not ok with anything too big. I am wanting to find a way for him to have a couple (non-mating) African cichlids.
I am in the process to trying to rehome about 80 (3 different species) and I don't want him to go threw all these constantly procreating fish!!!
