You don't worry about the glass breaking with large predatory fish?

Go with Eheim. They're great. A guard will prevent a fish from biting it. My 7" Fahaka and 8" Ceylon don't even try biting them (and they bite everything!)

agree ^ hydor inline heater if you have a canister and eheim jager trutemp if you dont. those are my 2 top picks.

jager
you will immediately regret shelling out the dough for the e series the one day it almost get somewhat cold in your house

I've been looking at the Eheim Jager, and I have a few questions about it.

1. What heater guard fits it? (make and model please)

2. Is it really fully submersible? I have a bad habit of drowning heaters.:irked:

3. Should I get one big one? Or two smaller ones for the 6 foot long tank?

I was leaning towards two smaller heaters, to more evenly heat the tank, was wondering what the drawbacks of that would be.

Also, what's wrong with the viaaqua? I'm not so sure about a glass heater in the tank, just gives me the heebeejeebees. Can anyone recomend a heater that isn't glass and isn't inline?

I too have to say Hydor ETH heaters are the way to go. I run 2 of the 300 watt on my 120g, one on each canister. I really do think I would be fine with just one however.

If you are even considering heater guards; just get the heaters out of the tank! Why do you not want inline?

Hagen Tronic Heater guards fit Ebo's perfectly.

yes, they are fully submersilble

I would use two 200w heaters (one at each end).

a heater that is not inline and not glass is a Marineland stealth, but a quick search of this forum or just about any other big fish forum on the net will show TONS of failure issues in the last few years. I would avoid.

I can't believe people are still using older heater technology like Eheim Jager. As far as glass heaters go, they are probably the best, but here's some things to consider:
-They can and do still fail, like almost any heater not run on a controller
-They can shatter during water changes, even if you have a heater guard
-The additional expense of a heater guard if you want one
-They are pretty big... the 100 watt heater is like 12"!
-You have to reach your hand in the tank to adjust the temperature

WHY would you not use a titanium heater? They are bulletproof (don't ever shatter, don't need guards), come with external controllers that you can adjust outside the tank (and prevent them from failing), and they don't even cost more.

I would recommend the newer finnex titanium heaters... they were having issues with the controllers on some models... this is the new one that is supposed to be better... I haven't used it:

I have used the aquaheat but the controller gave out on me after 6 months... didn't cook my fish or anything, it just clicked on and off and I noticed it right away from the noise. But your best bet would be to throw down $100 for a really quality controller like a RANCO... then you can use any heater you want.

Ohhh, actually these JBJ titanium heaters look awesome. Time to do some research... I'm in the market for a new heater too after my Aquaheat controller crapped out.
