Help me set-up my DREAM tank!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was thinking about adding an external box to the back of the intank over flow so I could fit three 2" lines on mine. Since what is really restricting us is that 45 bend at each end of the over flow and the distance between the front wall of the over flow and the back wall.

I think a external box on the outside could hold all three line and also the return. Plus it would give the benefit of being able to put the bottom of the 90's on the siphon at the same level as the bottom of the teeth in the internal overflow, which I don't know if that could be done with running them inside the overflow with 2" 90 elbows.

I was reading the original reef central thread and his system used 3 1" pipes and he is quoted as saying at 1500gph his siphon gate valve is set at 30% restriction. sounds like 1.5 will do very nice.

Looking at the herbie it looks like its meant for bottom drilled overflows. So in order to us it for side drilled you would just extend the elbow much further down into the intank overflow box? Would this have the benefit of keeping dead water from sitting at the bottom of this box? I have wondered if the dead water in the bottom of the boxes would eventually cause issues.

I plan on using bottom drilled overflows no matter which method (Herbie or BeanAnimal) I use. I don't think the dead water will be a big issue. Just keep that area clean every once and a while.

I would like to use bottom drilled since there is more space, but I am not sure I would be able to reach to the bottom of my overflow box to tighten mine. I look forward to seeing more setup pics. I last night got a Herbie style over flow to work on my over head filter for my smaller tank. I must say it is silent now, just the sweet hum of pumps.

I haven't figured out how I'm going to reach mine yet either :D. It's a 3' tall tank. I'll get it done somehow. Nice work on the Herbie, I am leaning that way now I think.

My only thought on screwing the bottom in was doing it like I do my feeding tub. I have a feeding tube that I can only get to one side at a time. So on the side I cant reach I put the male end of the bulkhead, then on the side I can reach, I take the female end and put three fingers through it. I then stick my fingers inside the male part and then us them to hold it in place, and use my other hand too screw the female end.

This works fine since there is no water to deal with and its no big deal if its not 100% tight. In the end I think I will try to pre measure the length of PVC needed and glue it to the slip side of the bulkhead, so I can have something to hold on to, but to be honest I hate the idea of having a bottom bulkhead and no easy way of changing the plumbing out if I needed to.
