So long story short I am going to be in charge of a new fish tank for my school. It has not been purhchased yet, but my budget is probably about 300 dollars for tank. Because of this, I will be going the craigslist route (like a always do anyways;)) and it will likely end up being a 125. I would like to do a CA/SA mix, but I am not a true purist, and at the risk of being flamed I will say that I am open to africans too. I mix them at home with great success, I just feel like I have to be careful when I put new ones in and I haven't lost a fish due to aggression yet. So far, the only requirements are that it features at least 1 JD, because they are my favorite. Also, I think that I would not like to do any pairs. Reason being that this is going in my high school, and I don't think that kids will be interested in the tank if there are only one or two fish. If I can get something bigger I will consider an aro. Anyways, let me know what you guys think would be good for this tank. Unfortunately I don't know filtration yet, but I will not be going HOB only, probably a canister/sump with whatever else I can get.

Kids will go crazy over a semi-large GT, I find them to be very interactive once settled in not to mencion how attractive they are. From my experiences with the both in my tank, they should get along. - note individual temperament

Plus imo I prefer 1-2 bigger display fish then a bunch of tiny buggers.

You could also print out some pictures of the fish in mind and get the little ones to vote :P -never too early to teach them democracy rofl

You can get barred Midas, a Jag, a gt, salvini, Motags, loisellei, friedrichsthalii.... Grammodes would be COOOL! There are so many fish that you could get... Those are some I really like though :)

africans are the only way to go
kids love the intense colours and behaviors
do 1 frontosa
and just a big mix of mbuna
that would work great
gl ;)

Ya, Mbuna was the other option I was considering. In that tank I could probably do at least 30 fish no problem right? A front as a centerpiece would be aweosme too.

i would say 1 front and then probably 20 assorted mbuna
and pool filter sand bottom and some big driftwood

30 mbuna in a 125gallon? er what mbuna are you talking about? I have clost to 30 in my 55gallon..... but mosbo's are mean mofo's (females lay a whooping when they spawn) so I've overcrowded for aggression reasons.

Course tank maint. is a pita. Siphoned out every 3 days with 40% water change each time and filters need extra care due the amount of 'crap' they filter.

if you go SA/CA, you could always do some carpintis or some nics...a pair in a school tank would be awesome.. especially when they spawn... the kids would go ape if they came in one week and saw hundreds of fry swimming around.

A nice African setup would be really cool actually.... I never thought of it... They arent as personable as CA/SA but still neat... I think you should stick to either one or the other, just because of the different attitudes and specific water chemistries needed... And I really dont like the look of Africans in with CA/SA's haha

Better yet make it sand bottom and use pieces of slate to create caves and other things and make it a biotope so it is a natural environment for the fish and make it all educational and stuff;)
