Help me stock a 40gal breeder

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So what's the best way to keep my PH in the 6.5-7.0 range needed for the fish I'm planning?

I picked up a 50lb bag of pool filter sand yesterday for $10.58. I still have to get a glass top and I'm going to get a dual bulb 36" fixture so that I can have enough wattage for plants in the tank, right now there's only a single bulb 24" that came with the tank. Picked up the tank off craigslist for $30, the lady was using it for a turtle so it has a screen top. Anyway not much to show but here's the tank with sand, 1 rock and water in it :D Going to the LFS today (Aquarium Center) with my stock list to see what's available to me.

Just tested my PH (filled from hose yesterday, treated with Tetra Aquasafe, Magnum 250 HOT running since yesterday) it's 7.2. I plan on finding a nice large peice of driftwood for the tank, how much can I expect the PH to drop??

Thanks

I think they were refering to Cryptoheros septemfasciatus.

Only if you want more than 1 pair of cichlids in the tank ... 40 breeders are great size for Cryptoheros, but not much else with them. Except maybe nano's though, I'd rather go with a couple pairs of dwarves from south american myself.

Yea definately going for like 6 dwarfs a couple of bristlenose plecs and a couple of bronze Cories. Maybe a small school of neon tetra's (this is pretty much my g/f's and 2 daughters tank.

Just keep an eye on the bristlenoses though, most are fine and play nice with others ... some are actual terrors. I wouldn't trust my current one with dwarves, even dwarf pikes let alone apistos. I go oto's for dwarves.

Hello,
I have both of
- Mikrogeophagus altispinosus "Bolivian Ram"
- Mikrogeophagus ramirezi "Blue Ram"

They have been great...I really like the Dwarf cichlids
