Help me stock a 40gal breeder

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nah common bristlenose will be fine. even males.

But albino bristlenose males are way more agressive

so only would use common, orangespot, peppermints, longfins etc.

I would go apistos for the SA fish.

I think they were refering to Cryptoheros septemfasciatus.

Yep, back when I had them they may have been Archocentrus septfasciatums, but that name is outdated by now. I knew the scientific name, but I must have seen them refered to as "September Cichlids" somewhere. Either in the LFS where I bought them, in a magazine article (got tons of old fish magazines dating way back), or fish book. I liked the name, so it stuck with bme, besides, it's easier to pronounce:grinno:.

what are septembers? never heard that name before, looks like your into SA dwarfs, but you could always do a huge group of nanoleutus, honduran red points, etc, a gymneophagus balzani tank with some apistos would fit the planted tank much better though IMO

It's only a 29 Gallon, I wouldn't put more than two Nanoluteus in there, and I think it's too small for full grown G. balzanii as they get quite big, up to 7" fully grown. You could keep 1 or two but they'd do better in a decent sized colony.

oh my bad japes i was posting thinkin this was a 40 breeder, scratch what i said then!

i would just do apistos then and a group of tetras

Whoops, the title is 40 Breeder, had it in my head that it was a 29 for some reason (bloody American tank sizes!), regardless, I'd still only go for 3 Nano's in that sized tank. I think Apistogramma's or other dwarfs are a better overall choice, especially for a planted community tank of that size.

Went to the LFS yesterday and they had a wild pair of Apistogramma Cacatuoides, so I put them on hold :D going to pick them up next week!
I think I've decided on my stocklist:

2x Apistogramma Cacatuoides (wild caught on hold)
2x Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
3x Apistogramma Borelli
2x Longfin bristlenose plecos (picking up 5 today)
3x Bronze Cory catfish (picking up today)

That's a nice piece of driftwood. I've been hiitng all the LFSs trying to find some really nice pieces to put in my new 150, haven't found anything that nice yet. I would have bought your's though, good pickup.
